Obituary

On February 21, 2023, at Wilson Hospice House, Death paid a call to Angie Kate Atkins. He thought that he had scored a victory over her by possessing her physical body.  However, Angie had already received an official visit from the Lord. He quietly whispered in her ear, "Angie, I am not a God of the dead, but of the living.  Because of your faith, you know that your earthly house, this body, will dissolve; but you also know that I am the resurrection and the life: he who believes in me though he were dead, yet shall he live.  Death has no victory.  Welcome home, my good and faithful servant."  Our beloved Angie Kate Atkins, who was a loving wife, sister, aunt, and friend, is now present with the Lord and rests in the Eternal Arms of Jesus.

Angie was born November 15, 1931, in Leesburg, Georgia, to the late Walter and Johnnie Mae Smith.  She was educated and graduated from high school in Lee County, Georgia. She fell in love and married       Andrew Atkins in 1954. He was a hardworking and determined man who would take her from a small country town in Georgia to the big city of Detroit, Michigan. Here they began their long life together. She proudly worked for and retired from Holiday Inn, as a Domestic.  She did not have children of her own, but felt God blessed her to be a grandmother figure in the lives of Harold, Tyree, and Louie Jackson.

Born into a family of seven, Angie would be preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and her husband. Whatever trials confronted her, Angie rejoiced in God's spirit of love, power, grace, and mercy. Therefore, her house was always a place of welcome, warmth, and comfort. To her friends and family, she was nurturing and gentle. To her        husband she was the love of his life, an ever-present friend and partner.

Known as the historian in the family, Angie took pride in telling stories of her family from her youth.  She made sure the younger generations knew the history of the lineage of Walter and Johnnie Mae Smith.  She would often say, "I can remember back when I was three years old."  She also took pride in her flowers and garden. She planted a garden each year through the age of 90.  She was a generous person and found joy in sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends.  Foremost in her life was serving the Lord.  While she was a member of New Piney Grove Baptist Church of Leesburg, Georgia, she fellowshipped with the Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Oakfield, Georgia.

Angie Kate Atkins was the last surviving matriarch of the Smith Family. She leaves to celebrate her life a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
