Aureatha Willis Flowers was born in Albany, Georgia on August 22, 1935. She was the beloved daughter of the late R. L. Willis and Susie Mae Willis.
She was educated in the Dougherty County School System, graduating from Monroe High School. Hailing from a family that valued higher education, Aureatha earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Albany State College (University); Masters of Education degree from Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama; and the Education Specialist degree from Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia.
Endearingly known to many as "Aunt Aureatha," she was privileged to have had a profound professional career that spanned more than 30 years. She was a dedicated educator, having worked for the Atlanta Board of Education, Cobb County Board of Education, and Troup County Board of Education. Throughout her career, she served as a Resource Teacher, Remedial Reading and Math Instructor, Interrelated Resource Instructor, Adult Basic Education Program Instructor, and Supervising Teacher Services and Bilingual Instructor.
In addition to her passion for education, Aunt Aureatha was involved with numerous groups and academic societies. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Toastmasters International; recognized in Who's Who in the World in 1989-1990; and received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Boy Scouts of America. She also received numerous other accolades and certificates for her contributions.
A very loving and caring individual, Aunt Aureatha's life is best described by the words penned by the songwriter, "If I can help somebody as I pass along...then my living shall not be in vain." Her warm smile, compassionate spirit, and kind words and deeds enriched the lives of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the community she served throughout her life.
On December 24, 2023, Aunt Aureatha peacefully transitioned from this earthly life in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 88.
She is survived by her sister, Bernice Parker; brother-in-law, Pearson Parker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
