Obituary

Bertha Louise King Thorpe was born in Arlington, Georgia on October 2, 1931.   She was the beloved daughter of the late Mr. Saul King, Sr. and Mrs. Annie Lou Washington King. She was married to the late Mr. George Thorpe, Jr.

She received her formal education in the Calhoun County School System. She was a 1948 graduate from Arlington Vocational High School. She graduated from the Albany Beauty School of Cosmetology and was a licensed Cosmetologist.  She was a 1966 graduate of the Monroe Area Vocational School with a diploma in Practical Nursing.  She later graduated with an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Albany Junior College (Albany State University) in 1978.  She was also a 2004 graduate from the Christian Life School of Theology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Theology.

At a young age she confessed her belief in Christ and joined Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Bluffton, Georgia.  She later joined and fellowshipped with Greater Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church and Rivers of Living Water Church International.  In 2016, she joined Abba's House of Prayer and Training Ministries where she served as the Mother of the Church and Bible Teacher.

Bertha was a very persistent individual whose professional work life was diverse and rewarding.  For numerous years she was employed as a nurse at HCA Palmyra Hospital, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Dr. Clarence Calhoun where she retired.

Loving daughter, devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, caring sister, committed aunt, cherished cousin, and loyal friend, Bertha embraced every opportunity and chance to experience life with open arms.  She was a delightful man with a big nurturing heart, selfless with her love, and a joy to be around.  Her love for family and friends knew no boundaries and she touched their lives in a very special way.  She will long be remembered for her generosity and unconditional love.  Bertha have opened her home to many of people when they needed a place to live.  She was also a mother to many.

On August 7, 2020, Almighty God in His wise way removed from this life the soul of Mrs. Bertha Louise King Thorpe at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sons: John Richmond King, Thyrone Canthrell King, and Donald Edward King; five siblings: Dorothy McFarland, Barbara Kinchen Jordan, Martha Jean Crawford, Saul King, Jr. and Willie Roy King, Sr.

Fond memories will forever be cherished by her daughter: Dorothy King Garner (Donnie) of Albany, Georgia; two sons: Abdullah Muhammad (Rahseedah) of Bridgeton, Jersey; Jerry King (VeVerette) of Lanham Maryland;  two sisters-in-law: Rosa Johnson, Ella Caldwell (Samuel) of Albany, Georgia; she nurtured, mothered and raised her granddaughter: Lolita King, great-grandchildren: Shamiah McAllister, Hassan McAllister, Jr, and  foster son: Richard Toson,   twenty -three grandchildren,  52 great-grandchildren, one devoted friend: Fannie O'Neal of Washington, DC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
