Mother Carrie Laster Moore was born in Sylvester, Georgia on July 15, 1925, to the late Will and Amanda Laster. She was the eleventh of thirteen children.
She received her primary and secondary education in the Worth County School System. Throughout school, she demonstrated exceptional potential while developing a deep passion, genuine care, concern, and calling to serve others.
Mother Moore grew up in a strong Christian home where the foundation for her walk the Lord was laid. At a very early age she was baptized and received the "right hand of fellowship" into the body of Christ at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sylvester. From that point forward, she devoted herself faithfully to God's calling on her life. Mother Moore served the Lord with her whole heart and never wavered in her service. After relocating to Albany, she united with the Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend William Boyd. It was there that her love for God was strengthened and her spiritual gifts were nurtured. Over the years, she availed herself in service as a member of the Sanctuary Choir, General Mission, Women's Ministry, and Deaconess Ministry. Mother Moore continued to grow in her spiritual walk as she was fed the word of God through Reverend J. A. Severson. She firmly believed that in life, you never stop learning and growing in your Christian walk. You could not know her without being inspired by her strong faith and convictions.
Family was paramount in Mother Moore's life. She was united in marriage to Mr. Mercie D. Moore who preceded her in death. As a wife, she supported her husband in all his endeavors; as a mother of eight children, she worked tirelessly to ensure that her children were nurtured in the admonition of God. Her diligence in caring for her family was the personification of a Proverbs 31 Woman, "A wife of noble character whose worth was far above rubies…..Her children rose up and called her blessed."
Mother Moore was a pillar of strength and the heart of her household and community. Her legacy is not only one of love and compassion, but also a testament to the enduring power of a life dedicated to others. In addition to her role as homemaker, she was a self-employed licensed cosmetologist for many years. Although hairstyling was rewarding, her passion for cooking led her to a career in food service. Her culinary journey began at Dixie Sandwich Company where her skills were put to task daily. No matter what the assignment, she never shied away from a challenge. In later years, accepted employment at Albany State College (University) and worked in multiple capacities, including "Gold Room" manager. She was an exceptional employee who always gave her best. Upon retirement in 1989, she was lauded for her character, integrity, high expectations, unparalleled work ethics, and perseverance.
While Mother Moore never sought to make a name for herself, she was highly respected wherever she went. She was a trusted friend and confidant and would lend a listening ear to those in need of compassion and support. Yes, she "lived the life that she sang and talked about" every day of her life. Blessed beyond measure, Mother Moore lived a rich and rewarding life; reached the hallowed age of 98; and lived to see generations of her off-springs with whom she left a legacy of love, humility, and godliness. She will be remembered by many as an unselfish servant, an awesome cook who blessed others with soulful meals, and a true master of sweet potato pies.
On June 4, 2024, Mother Moore quietly answered the Master's call to eternal peace and rest. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Moore and Norman Moore; and eleven siblings.
Loving memories and her legacy of love and godliness will forever remain in the hearts of her children, Eddie Moore (Lillian) of Atlanta, GA, Gloria Garner (Joe), Catherine Hill (Larry), Carrie Green (Isreal), and Wilbert Moore (Felicia) all of Albany, GA, and Brenda Harrell ((Eschol) of Atlanta, GA; four bonus children, Earl Nelson (Linda), Ruby Blow (Milford), Nancy Smith, and Ira Nelson (Janet); her sister, Ella Elliott of Jamaica, NY; 25 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
