Mrs. Christine Hill Mercer was born in Lawrenceville, Virginia on March , 1925. She was the beloved daughter of the late Anna Hill and Robert Trotter. Christine spent most of her life in Newark, New Jersey, where she received her formal education in the Newark Public School System.
From a very early age, Christine was nurtured in the Word of God. Early in life, she began her fellowship with Christ at the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Newark, New Jersey. She was a dedicated member and served faithfully in numerous church ministries. She was a prayer warrior, who dearly loved the Lord and she stayed on the battlefield.
Christine met and married the love of her life, Jack Benjamin Mercer. Their union of love and devotion endured for seventy-three years and they were blessed with three children, Jacqueline, Ernestine, and Benjamin. She was a devoted wife and mother who looked well to the ways of her household and ate not the bread of idleness. For many years, she skillfully balanced her responsibilities as a homemaker with her employment duties at Hazel Bishop Cosmetics, Inc., Plainfield, New Jersey.
In 1970, Christine and her husband relocated to Southwest Georgia where they were surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Chris as she was fondly called, was a compassionate, generous, and kind lady with a servant's heart. Her door was always open and she made every effort to ensure that no one went without. Many of her family and friends described her as funny and witty, as gracious and caring, and as a beautiful lady with a dazzling smile who will be sorely missed.
On Saturday, May 26, 2018, our dear mother Christine transitioned peacefully into the arms of our Savior at the seasoned age of 93 years old. Hers was a "life well lived." In addition to her parents, she was preceded into the kingdom by her beloved husband, Mr. Jack Benjamin Mercer; and two sisters, Virginia Hill and Mary Anna Starke.
She leaves fond memories to be cherished by her children, Jacqueline (William) Chavis, Ernestine M. Brown, and Benjamin (Carolyn) Mercer; one brother, Robert Lassiter; nine grandchildren, Dawn Brown, Dr. Tamyra Brown, Akbar (Mahogany) Mercer, Aisha Mercer, Jabari (Antonia) Chavis, Kwesi (Bretorya) Hopkins, Omar (Shy) Mercer, Rasheed Mercer, and Christina Chavis; 18 great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Julia Green; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
