Obituary

David Lovett was a man with a quiet disposition who loved to travel. He adored his family, loved his career, and would be ecstatic to talk about anything but especially the weather. The hobbies that brought him joy were fixing things around his daughters' homes, window box gardening with his granddaughter, and being the designated driver for doctor's appointments and family trips. He enjoyed baseball, Jeopardy, bowling, and listening to music. His musical taste included oldie goldies and traditional gospel/quartets.

David is the eldest child of Maude and the late Rev. James Lovett. He entered this world on December 15, 1947, in the city of Edison, Ga. He grew up in Morgan, Ga, and was educated in the Calhoun County School System. He is a proud alumni member of the H.T. Singleton High School's class of 1965.  After graduating, he entered the United States Air Force, where he served faithfully and is an honored Vietnam Veteran. Before leaving the Air Force, David furthered his education in Postal Management. After leaving, he found what was to become one of his most cherished things in life—his career with the United States Postal Service.

In 1967 David married Dorothy. The two have been companions since she was in the eighth grade. To their union, three children were born Tonja, Trina, and David. David was accepting of everyone and loved his immediate and extended family. He has been an integral part of raising nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and anyone else who needed his help.

He gave his life to Christ early and was a dedicated and lifelong member of the Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. In 1972 he was ordained as a Deacon and continued to serve faithfully in many capacities within the church. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent for over forty years. He served as financial secretary and building fund treasurer for the Dawson District Union Meeting. He also served as the financial secretary for the Spring Creek Mt. Hosea UAFWB Annual Conference and the vice-president for the Spring Creek Mt. Hosea YPCL.

David retired as a Postmaster from the United States Postal Service after 33 years of dedicated service. He was the first black Postmaster of Edison, Ga. He later worked for the city of Albany, Ga, in the mailroom and retired from that post. He continued as an active member of the United Postmasters and Managers of America. He was very active at national conventions and legislative conferences, working as a Sergeant at Arms and other positions through the years. He served as the Ga NAPUS President for two years and most recently served as Chaplin.

David leaves to cherish his memories and honor his legacy Dorothy, his loving wife of 53 years; his children, Tonja Lovett-Hawkins of Albany, GA, Trina Lovett of Jacksonville, FL; and David (Lakeya) Lovett of Albany, GA; the love of his life, his granddaughter Da'Yana Lovett; grandsons, Ahrion Covington and Cameron Tramble; goddaughter and his heartbeat, Jylanthia Redding of Atlanta, GA; his mother, Maude Lovett of Morgan, GA; five siblings, Joan Hooker and James A.
