Obituary

Edgar Allan Wilson, Sr. was born January 2, 1924, in Albany, Georgia. He was the beloved son of Charlie and Joanna Wilson.

He received his formal education in the Dougherty County School System, including Madison High School.

Edgar was raised in a Christian home where he was taught the Word of God and the importance of living a life of integrity, strong character, and kindness. At an early age, he professed his faith and belief in Christ and united with the Union Missionary Baptist Church. He was a dedicated member and a member of the Male Choir.

In 1943 after heeding the call for military duty, Edgar enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed throughout the United States and abroad, and served his county with distinction. He was a soldier to the core and the discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him. He was a World War II veteran and received numerous awards, decorations, medals, and citations, which include the Army Rifleman Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, America Campaign Medal, and the WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button.   At the close of his tour of duty, he received an honorable discharge.

He was united in holy matrimony to Lenora Billingsley and their union was blessed with four children. Edgar was a persistent, hardworking man who devoted much of his time and energy providing for his family. After moving his family to Cleveland, Ohio, he was the first black to hired as a carpenter with General Motors, Inc. Over the years, he was hailed as a loyal and dedicated employee. He retired after more than 30 years of service and relocated back to Albany.

Edgar had a mind that never ceased questioning, a serious twinkle in his eyes, a loving spirit, and a heart that opened freely to family and friends. He enjoyed bowling, carpentry, traveling, and entertaining.

On April 19, 2020, Edgar answered the call to eternal rest. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by eight siblings.

Left to cherish fond memories are his children, Edgar Wilson, Jr. of Cleveland, OH, Yvonne Baily and Carmen Works of Albany, GA, and Charles Wilson of Conyers, GA; grandchildren, Marlon Lawrence, Ieshia Wilson, Michelle Strange, Marion Taylor, Keisha Robinson, Ashlee Bailey, and Robert Works, Jr.; seven great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
