IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ella
Washington
August 20, 1934 – January 24, 2019
The journey of life for Ella Jean Washington began in Albany, Georgia on January 26, 1923. She was the only child of the late Peter Ellis and Lucille Odom-Johnson.
During the early years of her life, she was educated in the Dougherty County School System.
From a very young age, Ella Jean was nurtured in the Word of God. As a youth, she began her Christian journey and never strayed away. In 1969, she united with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served on the Usher board until age 75. While on her post greeting the congregation with a smile, it was evident that "Mother Washington" as she was affectionately called by many, held fast to her belief that she would "rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord." Strong in her faith, in character, and in wisdom, she stayed on the battlefield—always giving God the praise and glory.
Mother Washington had a deep sense of family loyalty, ties, and responsibilities. Having grown up with her cousins, Grady, Benny, and Great Jean Odom while her mother attended college to become a nurse; she became the family's "stronghold" in adulthood—she was the "glue" that held them all together. As a loving and devoted mother, she was extremely conscientious in caring for the needs of her children through her employment as a housekeeper. No matter what the task, she worked tirelessly to ensure that nothing was left undone.
Always gentle, kind, and personable, Mother Washington was loved by all who had the privilege of having her in their lives. She was a selfless person who saw the beauty in all things, accepted everyone for who they were, and openly welcomed them into her heart and home. She was considered by many as a wise and trusted counsel, a difference maker, and a strong but humble person who will be missed dearly.
On January 24, 2019, Mother Washington's earthly journey ended peacefully at the Amicasa Hospice Center in Decatur, Georgia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Theodore Jacob, Sr. and Janice Garmon.
She is survived by four children, Corles (George, Sr.) Smith of Albany, GA, Henry G. Washington of Los Angeles, CA, Ronnie Washington, Sr. of Albany, GA, and Helen R. Washington of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Theodore Jacob, Jr., Deon Jacob, Leon Jacob, Tabitha Smith, Sophia Smith-Scott, George Smith, Jr., Demetrius Smith, Henry G. Washington, Janice Washington, Ronnie Washington, Jr., Michael Williams, Michelle Williams, and Lashonna Washington; nine great grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.
