Obituary

A Time To Be Born: Mrs. Emma Lean Sumbry, beloved daughter of the late Marion and Pearlie Bass, was born in Cotton, Alabama on February 28, 1936.  She was the oldest of sixteen children.

A Time To Learn: She received her elementary and secondary education in the Russell County School System.  Throughout school, Emma was an energetic, jovial young lady and a ray of sunshine to teachers, fellow students, and close friends.

A Time To Grow In Christ: At a very early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and remained prayerful throughout life's journey.

A Time To Love: In 1954, Emma was united in holy matrimony to      Reverend Milton Lee Sumbry, Sr.  They shared a bond that endured for 68 years while honoring their vows love and respect each other.  As a wife, she supported her husband in all of his undertakings; as a mother, she worked tirelessly to ensure that her children and grandchildren understood the  value of hard work and perseverance.  Domestic at heart, Emma was a very meticulous homemaker who eagerly welcomed family and friends into her heart and home.

A Time To Embrace: Devoted wife, loving mother, awesome grandmother, caring sister and aunt, unforgettable cousin and friend, Emma embraced  life with open arms.  She had a kind heart; a very generous spirit; enjoyed good  conversation and lots of laughs; and treasured the time spent with family, friends and neighbors.  She will be dearly missed.

A Time To Rest: On Saturday, April 30, 2022 surrounded by her children, Emma transitioned from this earthly life to eternal rest.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Reverend Milton Lee Sumbry, Sr.; and eight children.

A Time To Cherish: Precious memories will forever be cherished by her children, Walter James Sumbry, Geraldene (Lorenzo) Hampton, Chester (Sharon) Sumbry, Franklin (Angela) Sumbry, and Eddie (Mary) Price all of Albany, GA, Meshia (Torance) Lawrence of Columbus, GA, Keshia King of Atlanta, GA, and Valerie Mainer of Savannah, GA; one sister, Mary James of Columbus, GA; one brother-in-law, William (Janie) Sumbry of    Phoenix City, AL; sisters-in-law, Lillie Ashford and Willie Mae Body; daughters-in-law, Mary Sumbry and Ethel Sumbry; 48 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren; a special caregiver, Doretha Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
