IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn Ruth
Harris Bell
May 27, 1947 – January 5, 2021
The season of life for Evelyn Ruth Harris Bell began in Albany, Georgia on May 27, 1947. She was the beloved daughter of the late Martha Ella Harris. Evelyn grew up in a loving home with seven siblings and a cousin/sister.
She received her formal education in the Dougherty County School System and was active in numerous student organizations and activities.
While yet a budding young lady, she met and married the love of her life, Marion Bell, Jr. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children, Audrey and Marion. After ten years of marriage, Evelyn relocated to Newark, New Jersey with her brothers; thus, beginning a new era in her life. The next 32-years in Newark were filled with infinite joy, countless adventures, taking care of her home providing for her children, engaging in the community, and forming lasting bonds of friendships. She was a proud member of a girls club called "The Roses," along with her girlfriends, Sarah, Pearl, Vera, Pam and Sharon.
Evelyn had a servant's heart and felt most comfortable when helping others. Her true strength and devotion illuminated daily in her work at United Hospital of Newark and later at the Essex County Detention Center. She worked hard to consistently pursue excellence and make a positive difference in the lives of those she served. After more than 30 years of loyal and dedicated service, she retired and moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia where she remained until her demise.
Affectionately known as "Tattie" and "Mama Bell" by many, Evelyn was full of energy, a spit-fire, and she stayed on the move. She was often described as bossy; but she had a heart of pure gold. She was always on top of current affairs, could converse on multiple topics with ease, and was a true sports fan—basketball and football. Family meant the world to her and she spent countless hours making calls every day to her siblings and friends. It is easy to say that her grandchildren held the key to her heart and she proudly bragged on their accomplishments, big or small. Though her dream to open a non-profit for disadvantage youths was never realized, that didn't deter her from helping people in her own way.
On January 5, 2021, our earthly angel, Evelyn, transitioned to eternal peace and rest. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Bell, Jr.; two brothers, Eddie Harris and Arthur Harris; cousin, Betty Givens; and her brother-in-law, Marvin Whitfield.
Loving memories will forever remain in the hearts of her children, Audrey (Franklin) Bell-Kearney of Lawrenceville, GA and Marion (Vivian) Bell, III of Grayson, GA; grandchildren, Dominique Bell-Hagler of Lawrenceville, GA, Jasmyn Bell of Atlanta, GA, Tre' Bell of Starksville, MS, and Jaylen Bell of Grayson, GA; great granddaughter, Carter Copeland; step grandchildren, Katrina Kearney and Michael Bell; siblings, Dorothy Whitfield, David Harris, Tommy Harris, William Harris, and John (Lori) Blount; sister-in-law, Marie Bell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
