Obituary

George Lawrence Whitfield, Jr., son of the late George Lawrence Whitefield, Sr. and Velvie Allen Whitfield, was born in Edison, Georgia on May 26, 1946.

He was educated in the Calhoun County School System, graduating from H. T. Singleton High School.  After graduation, George was drafted and served the United States Army with distinction for four years.  Upon completion of his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged  and relocated to Albany, Georgia in 1968.  Once there, he matriculated at Albany Area Vocational School, now Albany Technical College.

George's Christian journey began early in life at Mount Ebel Baptist Church in Calhoun County.  He was a strong, faith-filled man who dearly loved the Lord and committed himself unfalteringly to his calling as a Deacon.  After settling in Albany, he united with Beulah Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend J. H. Reynolds and continued his service as a Deacon and Chairman of the Trustee Board.  Over the years, he remained steadfast in service and his encouraging words touched the lives of many people.

A very industrious and highly skilled individual, George's professional career included employment at Firestone Tire & Rubber Plant; Burlington Trucking Company; and his personally-owned business, WhitCo Construction Company.  Throughout his career, he distinguished himself as a conscientious worker was totally committed to his job and always provided superior service..

George was considerate, outgoing, and had a passion to be of service to others.  He was outspoken and straightforward, yet modest and fair.  He deeply believed in unconditional love, always had a smile on his face, and took joy in helping anyone in need—never asking anything in return.  Even in the midst of health challenges, George remained positive and upbeat; always trusting in the Lord and giving Him the glory.  His love and kindness to all people are lasting tributes to his compassionate heart and soul.

George's devoted wife and love of his life, Katie King Whitfield, was by his side as he transitioned on January 11, 2023, at Phoebe Putney Memorial.  Although his departure leaves a void, we have the blessed assurance that he is at peace with the Lord.

Loving memories will forever be cherished by his beloved wife, Katie King Whitfield; his aunt, Amanda Booker of Wintergarden, FL; siblings, Helen Turner of Albany, GA, Willie C. Whitfield of Atlanta, GA, Ricky Trice (Phyllis) of Albany, GA, and Patricia (Melvin) Anderson of Albany, GA; stepchildren, Robert Graper, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Reverend Rodriquez Graper of Albany, GA, Sharlese Lowe of Atlanta, GA, and Denise Lowe of South Carolina; step-grandchildren, Morghan Graper and April Smith of Atlanta, GA, and Kayla Graper of Augusta, GA; nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends.
