Obituary

The journey of life for Georgia Lee Sherman Whitaker began in Sasser, Georgia on August 13, 1932.  She was the beloved daughter of the late George and Harriett Denson Sherman.

During the early years of her life, she received her formal education in the Terrell County School System, including Dunbar High School of Sasser, Georgia.

Having professed her faith in Christ at a very early age, she united with County Line Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Z. H. Bailey.  For many years, she was a faithful, dedicated member who served willingly wherever needed.  In 1969 after being joined in holy matrimony to Ray Whitaker, she united with the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Lee County.  Over the years, she served faithfully as a Deaconess, Usher, and a member of the Mission.    Upon the demise of her beloved husband, she reunited with  County Line Missionary Baptist Church and served unwaveringly in numerous capacities until her health declined.  She was a vessel who was deeply rooted and grounded in the Lord; who loved her church family immensely; and who was strong  in character and wisdom.

Mother Whitaker, as she was affectionately called by many, was a selfless person who saw the beauty in all things, accepted everyone for who they were, and openly welcomed them into her heart and home  She was a giver—always willing to give to others, especially her grandchildren who held the key to her heart,  She was a phenomenal mother, and extraordinary grandmother and great grandmother, a wonderful sister and aunt, a loving cousin, and an unforgettable friend.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her dearly.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Mother Whitaker was called from labor to reward.  In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was preceded in death by eight siblings, Susie Teele, Jack Sherman, George Sherman, George Sherman, Willie Sherman, Annie Mae Young, Abe Sherman, Ella Sherman, Charlie Sherman, and Isaac Sherman.

Loving memories will forever be cherished by her only son, Asmar "Boot" Shabazz of Albany, GA; grandchildren, Rasheeda Sherman, Demetrius Walker, Kawanis Roddy, Keria Mitchell, Quantorah White, Juliette Myers, Plum Paige, and Shateka Brown; great grandchildren, Zion, Aliah, Dude, King, Shanyah, Kaden, Carter, and Tre; two siblings, Annie Bell "Bob" Sherman of Albany, GA and Julia Mae "Cuda" Bell of Leesburg, GA; a devoted niece, Virginia (Terry) Jones of Albany, GA; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and friends.
