Obituary

Gladys Pope Williams was born January 16, 1919, to Bob and Dixie Pope in Dawson Ga. She was the fourth oldest of nine siblings. Gladys received her education in the Terrell County School System.

In 1938 she met and married Ozzie Williams and through that matrimony they bore three children, Louise Williams (Cuff) of Coco Beach, FL, Bernice Williams (Hamilton) of Albany, GA. and Helen Williams (Jones) of Atlanta, GA.

Gladys accepted God at an early age and joined New Hope Baptist Church in the Arlington Georgia District.  Upon her move to Albany, Georgia, she became a longtime member of New Macedonia Baptist Church. In her latter years, she joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church until she transitioned to her heavenly home.

Although she was small in stature, her heart was enormous. Gladys shared her love with everyone she encountered throughout her life. Known as the "traveling family nurse" she spent her life's journey with family members who were ill and in need of her care. Gladys adored her family and could always tell you exactly what was on her mind!  While to her friends she was the little lady who lived on Zachary Drive, to her family she was the matriarch.  She took in everyone who knocked on her door and took care of not only her children and grandchildren, but her siblings' children and grandchildren as well.

In her 102 years of life, Gladys has proven to be a survivor.  She fought and lived through the Spanish Flu pandemic, beat breast cancer and lived through the COVID-19 pandemic.  She witnessed and participated in many historical events, including the civil rights movement, marching for equal rights, and voting for the first African American president.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Ozzie Williams; parents Bob and Dixie Pope; her eight siblings, Ethel Owens, Robert Pope, Willie Pope, George Frank Pope, Simon Pope, Dorothy Pope, Cleveland Pope and Sam Pope. Three grandchildren, Michael Johnson, Louis B. Johnson, Charlie Mae Johnson, one great grandchild,  Reginald L. Johnson,  great-great grandchild, Payton S. Washington, and two sons-in-law, Bobby Jones and Willie G. Cuff.

Gladys leaves to cherish her memories, three daughters and one god son, Forrest Searls of Jacksonville, FL; son-in-law, Willie Hamilton. Ten grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and great great-great grandchildren.

Gladys Pope Williams the world will never be the same and you are to blame!
