IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jessie Mae
Brown
May 3, 1932 – July 1, 2025
Mrs. Jessie M. Brown, beloved daughter of the late Curtis and Viola O'Harra, was born in Early County-Blakely, Georgia on May 3, 1932. She was the 3rd child of a family of seven children.
Growing up in Blakely, Mrs. Brown was eager to leave the cotton fields and find new beginnings in the city. Love guided her to that dream
when she met her sweetheart, Sam E. Brown, one sunny day while she was playing stick ball. As Mr. Brown has told the story, he was very
impressed when "Jessie came to bat and with one hand hit the ball way over his car". This action led to months of courtship and later to matrimony on December 26, 1951. Their union endured for more than 66 years until the passing of Mr. Brown in 2018. Their legacy is blessed with 8 children, a host of grandchildren and many great grandchildren; the latest addition to this legacy is a great- grand son born 3 days ago.
Mrs. Brown had two work experiences during her marriage: working at Bob's Candy Co. and being a school- crossing guard. Her primary role
in life was to be a highly talented and devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Mrs. Brown poured into raising her eight children. She taught us quiet lessons by being the caring, strong woman she was. Mama would defend us from all harm. One example, Baby sister said that she proved it when Mrs. Brown had a stern talk and threatened to fight her "mean" 3rd grade teacher if she ever referred to Baby sister as "evil" again.
She taught us to have empathy for others. Mrs. Brown cared for her mother in the nursing home and she cared for three other ladies there also.
Holiday meals were exceptional. After feeding her family all of her good food, she took the leftovers to the homeless at the Greyhound Bus Station. Even with regular dinnertime meals, whoever was playing in the yard with us was welcome to our table.
Although a disciplinarian, Mrs. Brown taught her children and grandchildren: love God, manners, cleanliness, share, empathy, have fun and attain an education or skill for the future. Everything she did was done with genuine care and excellence whether it was making a grilled cheese sandwich or comforting a stranger in pain. She was a beautiful woman, carrying herself with dignity and respect. She and Mr. Brown were named Parents of the Year by Albany State University having 5 of 8 children graduate from ASU. The other 3 children developed skills in engineering and business ownership. In later years, Mrs. Brown was also a member of the 90's Plus Club at Third Kiokee Baptist Church.
The journey of life for Mrs. Brown ended on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 where she peacefully transitioned from our midst. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 siblings, and her lifelong friend, Mrs. Eulaties Pittmon.
Precious memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her; her loving children: Samuel (Carolyn) of Albany, Patricia Brown Makokha of Atlanta, Johnny (Jackie) Brown of Albany, Verna Brown of Atlanta, Lesia Brown of Atlanta, Reginald Brown of South Bend, IN, Larry Brown of Atlanta, and Linda Brown-Speer of Atlanta; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters Mary Alice Lee of FL,
Katie Straughter and Gradean Bullocks of KS; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
