Dr. Jimmie L. Sneed was the only child born on April 8, 1931, to gracious and loving parents of Will Sneed and Essie Lee Covington in Leesburg, Lee County, Georgia.
Growing up Jimmie was known as Tampa Red. He received his education in the public schools of Dougherty County, graduating from Monroe High School in 1950. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army. He successfully completed his military duties and then attended Albany State College; he received his BS degree in Education in 1956. He also attended Valdosta State College and Fort Valley State College where he earned a Master's Degree in Education in 1973. Lastly in the educational field, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Daniel Payne College in 1978.
He met the love of his life Dorothy Stagger Sneed, who was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and they were married May 22, 1954. His early teaching careers were in Grady County School District and Dougherty County Board of Education. He taught at several elementary schools within the Dougherty County School System. He retired March 1, 1985, after 30 plus years alongside his wife. Jimmie touched the lives of many students during his tenure as an educator. Jimmie spent his entire life dedicated to serving the Lord at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He was on the Deacon Board and served as a Financial Trustee. He later joined the superb Eureka Baptist Church where he was actively involved on the Deacon's Board, sung in the Sanctuary Choir, and traveled several times to the State and National Baptist Convention. He served as a Boy Scout Leader of the Boy Scouts of South Georgia. He also served as a Coordinator of the GED Program, City of Albany Housing Authority. Jimmie was an influential businessman since the mid 70's. He became a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi, Eta Omicron Graduate Chapter of Albany, Georgia, in 1968. This chapter focuses their talents on improving the quality of life within the Albany/Dougherty County, Georgia community.
Jimmie transitioned to heaven on May 5, 2021, to be with the Lord. He leaves to cherish all of his memories to: two devoted sons, Zibaska
(Christina)
and Darryl (Telaine): two sweet and strong daughters, Sebrenia Sneed-Farrell (Norman, Sr,) and Deneen; five grandchildren, Ciera, Deltrick, Vershawnda, Dexter, and Keyshawn; two great grand-children, Kaylie and Ky'ron; one sister, Grace W. Everett; one aunt, Rosa Mae Lee; three godsons, Dr. Bill Edge, Sr. (Elois), Richard Taylor, and Franklin Bell; three step grandchildren, Alexandria Farrell, Norman Farrell, Jr., and Jonah Phillips; and one step great grandchild, Eleni' Phillips. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
