Obituary

The season of life for JoAnne Martha Terrell began on March 5, 1948, in Newark, New Jersey.  She was the oldest of eight children.

She received her early childhood and secondary education in the Essex County School System.  Believing strongly in higher education, she continued her quest for knowledge in the Essex County College System with a major in sociology.

JoAnne was a selfless, altruistic mother whose hands were never idle.   Through the years, she was steadfast in her dedication to foster a home filled with strong family values and love for her four children—Yolonda Renee, Robert Jr., Vanessa Ann, and Sherisse Sahai.  She delighted in supporting her children in all their endeavors and often sacrificed her needs for the good of her family.

A highly skilled and accomplished seamstress, JoAnne's sewing skills stood out throughout her employment. Her attention to detail and superior workmanship; a well finished seam, a covered button, a concealed zipper, positioning of pin tucks and darts, or turning a collar; are mere fractions of the reasons why she was highly sought after in the industry.  She could do it all!

JoAnne was a very genuine, kind-hearted, simplistic person who embraced life's experiences with open arms. She never met a stranger, could converse with anyone who came into her life, and felt most content when serving others.  One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family—especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren who held the keys to her heart.  Her unwavering spirit, generosity, and unconditional love will forever be remembered.

On April 21, 2024, JoAnne transitioned from this earthly season in the comfort of her home.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Sherisse Sahai Terrell; a bonus daughter, Edith Melvin; and six siblings, Judy Robinson, Tina Margaret Franklin, Theresa Robinson, Vicky Robinson, Thomas Washington, and Lewis Washington.

Cherished memories will forever remain with her children, Yolonda Renee Washington, Robert Gary Terrell, Jr., and Vanessa Ann Terrell; her sister, Venus Robinson Burny; bonus children, Janet Martin, Reverend Linwood Melvin, and Louico Melvin; grandchildren and great grandchildren; a special friend and confidant, Linwood Melvin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
