Joe B. Smith was born in Albany, Georgia on June 24, 1955.  He was the beloved son of the late Gussie Lee Smith.

He received his formal education in the Dougherty County School System.  Throughout his school years, Joe was a very enthusiastic, free-spirited student who bravely trod to the beat of his own drum.

Early in life, Joe was taught to love and reverence God.  In 2022, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Joe was a very persistent, independent individual whose abiding love and support for his family was the hallmark of what he lived for.  For many years, he poured himself into his work as an environmental specialist at Phoebe Putney Hospital and Albany Healthcare.  No matter what the task, he was able to tackle any job assignment with seemingly endless energy—always giving his very best.

Loving father, doting grandfather, caring brother and uncle, committed cousin and friend, Joe was straight-forward, unpretentious, and strong-willed; but he was also the voice of calm,  comfort, and humor. He loved spending time with family and friends, enjoyed playing cards, and appreciated the simple pleasures of life.  His smile and kind deeds will be missed by so many people who loved him dearly.

On March 16, 2024, Joe transitioned from this earthly life at Pruitt Nursing Home.

Loving memories will forever remain with his children, Keisha Johnson Golden (Maurice) of Albany, GA, Briana Brown of Douglas, GA, and Demetrius Johnson of Sumner, GA; seven siblings, Louann Overstreet (Minister Johnnie),  Jennifer Branch (Jamal), Jimmy Lee (Eva), Charlie Smith (Clemetine)m Eddie Smith (Joyce), Nonkey Smith (Helen), and Alphonso Smith (Belinda); 14 grandchildren; a special friend, Sheila Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
