Obituary

John Henry Merrell was born January 13, 1940, in Morgan, Georgia. He was the beloved son of the late John Merrell, Sr. and Girlie Mae Mariel.

At an early age, John Henry accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He received his formal education in the Calhoun County School System where he participated in numerous school activities and events.

John Henry was deeply rooted in the soil. From a youth, he developed an unquenchable passion for farming that endured for many years. He was very persistent, hardworking, and gave the very best at whatever he did. After moving to Albany, Georgia, he was employed with the City of Albany. He later joined the ranks of employees at Flint River Textiles and labored tirelessly for 34 years. Upon retiring in 2002, he was lauded as a loyal, dedicated, and committed employee.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Annie Bell. They shared a love that was immeasurable and their union was blessed with six children. John Henry was a wonderful husband and father who always put his family first. He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of knowing right from wrong, respect for others, and the strength of a smile. He was most protective of his family and supported them in all of their endeavors.

Strong, outspoken, yet humble; John Henry was a very unique man who was full of life, compassionate, loving, and giving. He willingly shared his blessings with others and expected nothing in return. Oftentimes during his life, he reminisced about his childhood and humble beginnings. He was a "jack of all trades" who could do anything with a pocket knife. When not engaged in handyman chores, he could be found enjoying the beauty of nature—sitting by a creek or pond fishing, sharing stories, or solving problems.

On May 15, 2020, John Henry's earthly journey ended as he entered into eternal rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Bell Merrell; his daughter, Janice Ellis; and three siblings, Dan Mariel, Beaulah McCoy, and Ann Malone.

Loving memories will forever remain in the hearts of his children, Gregory Ellis, Anthony Ellis, Michael Ellis, Tammy Ellis, and Roosevelt Mariel; sister, MaeBell (John) Adams; sisters-in-law, Malinda Hicks, and Kimberly (Rufus) Ingram; brother-in-law, Ageel Williams; grandchildren, Russell, Jarvis, Antoinette, Deangelos, Angelea, Patrecia, Tyree, and Ashanti; seven great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and a very special caregiver, Sandrika Redding.
