IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Johnnie Burroughs,
Sr.
January 9, 1935 – February 6, 2024
Johnnie Burroughs, Sr. was born in Pelham, Georgia on January 9, 1935. He was the beloved son of the late Randolph B. Burroughs, Sr. and Pearl Stephens Burroughs. After the death of his parents during his younger years, he was nurtured and cared for under the guiding hands of his sister, Lillie Mae Reid.
He received his formal education in the Mitchell County School System. Throughout school, he was an exceptionally inquisitive young man who gained valuable technical and industrial skills both in the classroom and on his family's farm. Upon completing school, he relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his brother Flem Burroughs. Having acquired a deep passion for barbering, he enrolled in barbering school and completed the requirements to become a licensed barber.
Growing up in a strong Christian home, Johnnie was taught the Word of God and the value of living a Christ-like life. At a young age, he professed his faith in Christ and dedicated his life to His purpose. Through the years, he was a steadfast, prayerful servant who faithfully engaged in a Christian stewardship. He was a devoted member of St. Matthews Baptist Church in Sicklerville, New Jersey where he served as a Trustee. His faith and trust in God guided his life and allowed him to be an example for family, friends, and all he encountered. In later years, Johnnie relocated to Albany, Georgia; and on February 17, 1991, he united with Eureka Baptist Church. As he continued in his season of service, he devoted himself to unparalleled commitment to his calling as a Deacon, Church Treasurer, and mentor for younger men of the church. Deacon Burroughs was never satisfied with idleness—he was well organized, full of energy, and unwavering in making supply runs to Sam's to keep the church stocked with needed items. In all things, he was deeply rooted and grounded in the Lord.
Johnnie was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Betty Hill on September 15, 1973. Together, they embarked on a life filled with love and true devotion to each other. For 39 years, he proved to be a mighty fortress, a strong tower, and a true anchor to his wife. Their union was blessed with two children - Christina and Johnny, Jr., who were taught to love God and love each other. Deacon Burroughs delighted himself in supporting his family in all their endeavors. As a husband, father, and grandfather, and great grandfather, he showered his family with unconditional love and often sacrificed his needs for their good.
Endearingly known as "Mr. B" by many, Deacon Burroughs really knew what is meant to have a life well-lived. His career as a professional barber stretched over 70 years and an estimated one million haircuts. He opened his first barber shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the early 60s and quickly established himself as a "first-class" barber. The barber shop was his passion and he took great pride in his profession. Upon settling in Albany, Georgia with his family, he found that his reputation as an accomplished barber preceded him. As a result, he opened Burroughs Barber Shop at 1405 East Clark Avenue and continued his towering reputation into retirement. People from all walks of life flocked to him and were never disappointed. Customers looked forward to the time spent in his barber's chair, his storytelling and conversation, and his unending humor. His shop wasn't just a barbershop, it was a place to socialize; his clients were special to him—they were like family. He was a man of the people who saw everyone for who they were, without judgment. Over the years, Deacon Burroughs was an inspiring example of a successful businessman, mentor, and role model who generously gave his time and talents to help other young entrepreneurs and apprentices.
Anyone who knew Deacon Burroughs also knew that he loved being on the water deep fishing with his friends. If he wasn't on the water, he could be found visiting the Annual Farm Expo, playing pool, or basking in the sun at the beach. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, but he still loved his Philadelphia teams—the Phillies and the Eagles. His life was filled with many interesting experiences combined with community involvement. He was recognized by the US Air Force Recruiting Service for his support of USAF recruitment. During COVID, he shared government distributed boxes with his neighbors. He was compassionate, humble, loving, and giving; oftentimes giving free haircuts to those in need. Above his career, involvement, and many hobbies, Deacon Burroughs' pride and joy was his family. He spent countless hours attending events and activities in support of his children and grandchildren. He loved his family dearly and cherished the many trips to Florida to visit his sisters and brothers. It is fitting that the man who touched the lives of so many in his 89 years left an indelible legacy in his community.
On February 6, 2024, surrounded by his family, Deacon Burroughs transitioned from this earthly life to his heavenly home. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty Hill Burroughs; siblings, Annie Toi Burroughs, Henry Burroughs, Vera Burroughs, Lillie Mae Reid, Dottie Burroughs, Bertha Lee Warner, Randolph Burroughs, Aaron Burroughs, Vinnie Burroughs, Dorothy Pearl Burroughs, Owen Burroughs, and Louanna Burroughs; brothers-in-law, Arthur Hill, Russell Hill, Sylvester Hill, Bobbie Joe Hill, Michael Curtis, and Eugene Thomas; sisters-in-law, Georgia Hill and Harriett Thomas.
