Josephine Butler Ward was born in Albany, Georgia on September 27, 1929. She was the beloved daughter of the late Mr. Willie Butler and Mrs. Emma Lamar Butler.
She was married to the late Mr. Richard Ward, Sr. She received her formal education in the Dougherty County School System. She was the Matriarch of her family. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, and shopping. She adored pretty shoes, clothes and hats.
Josephine was a very persistent individual. Her professional work life was diverse and rewarding.
At a young age she confessed her belief in Christ and joined Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. She was the mother of the church and the church secretary.
Josephine was a loving daughter, devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great- great grandmother, caring sister, committed aunt, cherished cousin, and loyal friend, Josephine embraced every opportunity and chance to experience life with open arms. She was a delightful woman with a big nurturing heart, selfless with her love, and a joy to be around. She loved dancing. Her love for family and friends knew no boundaries and she touched their lives in a very special way. She will long be remembered for her generosity and unconditional love. Josephine have opened her home to many of people when they needed a place to live. She was also a mother to many. She was an excellent cook and feed many people daily.
On March 19, 2024, Almighty God in His wise way removed from this life the soul of Mrs. Josephine Butler Ward at her home surrounded by her loving family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons: Cornell Ward and Willie Ward; two daughters Patricia Ward Albritton and Mary Ward Williams, and nine siblings.
Fond memories will forever be cherished by her daughter: Gwendolyn Ward of Albany, Georgia; two sons: Richard Ward, Jr. and Alonza Ward of Albany, Georgia; one sister: Leola Moten of Albany, Georgia; twenty-five grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and six great- great grandchildren; a devoted daughter-in-law: Willie Kate Ward; Goddaughters: Bobbie Jean Hayes and Dr. Dorthy K. Garner of Albany, Georgia; Godson: Richard (Evelyn) Jenkins of Albany, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews,cousins and other relatives.
