IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry
Johnson
April 30, 1951 – October 10, 2020
Larry Johnson was born in Cochran, Georgia on April 30, 1951, to the late Jake Johnson, Sr. and Fannie Mae Rozier Johnson. He was the fourth of nine siblings.
He began his education in the Bleckley County School System and graduated from Cochran Colored High School in 1969. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served valiantly and with distinction. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal and Vietnam War Veteran. After military service, Larry was employed as a Civil Service Worker for 19 years at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia. Following his work in civil service, he started Johnson's Builders and Re-modelers.
Larry accepted Christ and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cochran, Georgia. He was a dedicated member and served faithfully on the Deacon Board. Over the years, he devoted himself to unparalleled commitment to his calling as he availed himself in Christian service.
On October 6, 1984, Larry married Sara Diane Sanders. Their union endured for 37 years while honoring their vows to love and cherish each other. Larry was a noble husband, father, grandfather, and provider who instilled great knowledge, character, and confidence in his family.
Motorcycles ranked high on his list of favorite things. He was a member of the Roadmasters Motorcycle Club of Albany; an affiliate of the US 19 Dragway where he was an avid drag racer; and a member of the American Legion Post 512.
Larry was a dedicated, hard-working, family-oriented, stern, jack-of-all-trades, giving, well-respected man. He understood well Ecclesiastes 9:11, "I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet the bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all."
Though Larry's earthly departure leaves a void in the hearts of family and friends, his spirit of caring and support will never be diminished or forgotten. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake Johnson, Sr. and Fannie Mae Rozier Johnson; his son, Derrick Troy Wade; and his sister, Verleane Monroe.
He leaves to forever cherish his memory and legacy a devoted and loving wife, Sara Diane Johnson; five children, Larry (Kenya) Johnson of Bellville, NJ, April (Charles) Kellum of Vidalia, GA, James (Tanzania) Johnson of Tallahassee, FL, Lawrence (Inez) Johnson of Honolulu, HI, William (Lawanna) Johnson of Albany, GA, and a stepdaughter, Amy (Angela) Hall of Stone Mountain, GA; fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren who held the key to his heart; seven siblings, LC (Peggye) Johnson of Winston Salem, NC, Mollie Johnson of Ellenwood, GA, Annie Pearl Little of Cochran, GA, Jake (Bettye) Johnson, Jr. of Marshallville, GA, Fannie Jackson of Jacksonville, FL, Ernest (Juran) Johnson of Columbus, GA, and Wardell (Angela) Johnson of Miami, FL; devoted friends, Albert Austin, Collier Dawson, Donell Davis, Stephen Pollard, and Larry Tinson; a special caregiver, Kayla Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
