Obituary

Lena Jean Smith, daughter of the late Bertha Mae and Jimmy Lee Mathis, was born in Albany, Georgia on March 18, 1953.

She received her formal education in the Dougherty County School System. Throughout her school years, Lena was an enthusiastic, inquisitive young lady with a passion for learning and was active in numerous student activities and organizations.

At an early age, Lena accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior.  She was a dedicated member of Eureka Baptist Church  where she served faithfully in various capacities and gave of herself freely until her health declined.  Her faith in God made her resilient and enabled her to live a life full of meaning and purpose.

Lena was united in holy matrimony to Robert Smith.  They shared a love that was strong and a devotion to one another that was unshakeable.  As a wife, she supported her husband in all of his undertakings; as a mother, she worked tirelessly to ensure that her sons were nurtured in the admonition of the Lord.  Lena dearly loved her family; provided unconditional support, tender guidance, and boundless love; and she cherished all the precious moments spent with them.

Affectionately known as "Moochie" by family and friends, Lena had a sweet, jovial spirit and was always willing to help in any situation.  She was the rock and foundation for many people and readily welcomed friends and family into her home filled with good conversation, lots of laughs, and mouthwatering meals.  She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

On Monday, December 21, 2021, Lena quietly departed this earthly life surrounded by loved ones.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Smith; four sisters; and two brothers.

Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of her sons, Benjamin Mathis and Michael Mathis of Albany, GA; grandchildren, Katoria Mathis, Xzaybior Mathis, Brooklyn Mathis, Ashley Mack, Benjamin Mathis, Jr., Alicia Mathis, Vanessa Winchester, Bry'Nia Rollins, Quindolyn Riggins, and Miracle Mathis; fourteen great grandchildren; five siblings, Julia Mathis, Jimmy Lee Mathis, Jr., Willie Mathis, Donald Mathis, and Jan Mathis all of Albany, GA; a devoted cousin/sister, Janie Noird-Bounts of Albany, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends .
