Leola Grier Walker was born into the family of the late Johnny and Martha Grier on December 30, 1932, in Benevolence, Georgia.
She received her elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Randolph County where was an outstanding player on her high school's basketball team.
She was united in holy matrimony to Ozell Walker. Their union was blessed with a loving family that they taught to be respectful and humble, to love one another, and to always trust in the Lord.
In the early 1950's, she relocated to Miami, Florida. While there, she became a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church where she served faithfully in many capacities until her health declined. She was a devoted wife and mother who ate not the bread of idleness, but worked diligently to provide for her family. She was an extremely talented and zealous cook whose culinary skills were put to task while employed in the food industry throughout Miami.
"Mother Walker" and "Sapphire" as she was affectionately called, lived a life of kindness and compassion. She was the neighborhood mom, a friend and confidant, and her home was always open to anyone in need. She enjoyed helping others and spending time with her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who were so blessed to have shared her life.
On July 15, 2018, Mother Walker was called from her labor to reward. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Dozell Walker and Ola Mae Walker; and ten siblings, Emma Grier, Beatrice Mae Francis Brown, Clementine Johnson, Walter Lee Grier, Clifford Grier, Joseph Grier, Bobby Lee Grier, MacArthur Grier, Isaac Grier, and Johnny Grier.
Loving memories will forever be cherished by her children, Bessie Robinson of Albany, GA, Bertha Walker of Charlotte, NC, Teresa Walker, Leroy Walker, Joseph Williams and William Walker all of Miami, FL, and Kenneth (Tangela) Walker of Butler, GA; two sisters, Lovonia Thomas and Helen Davis of Newark, NJ; her sister-in-law, Willie Alice Grier of Moultrie, GA; 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
