Obituary

Lindberg Gaines was born in Albany, Georgia on July 28, 1935. He was the oldest of four siblings born to the union of the late Oliver Gaines, Jr. and Delores Christian Gaines.

He was educated in the Dougherty County School System and he was active in numerous school organizations and activities.

At a very early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Believing strongly in loyalty and commitment to his country, Lindberg enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed throughout the United States and abroad, including Korea. Throughout his military career, he received numerous commendations for his valor and bravery. At the close of his years of service, he received an honorable discharge and returned back to civilian life and the workforce. For many years, he was employed as an Orderly at Halifax Hospital, Stock Manager at Winn Dixie Stores, and as a Warehouse and Production Supervisor at M & M Mars. He retired after rendering innumerable years of dedicated service.

From birth, Lindberg was affectionately called "Sporty"—a name that followed him into adulthood. He had a style and flair of his own, a gigantic personality and stance, and smile that would turn heads and light up any room that he entered. HE WAS A SPORT! Over the years, he developed many life-long friendships that will always be remembered. Lindberg was a "jack-of-all-trades" and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, planting gardens, and cooking. Oftentimes, he could be found in the kitchen hovering over a pot of Brunswick Stew which was rated 10 stars. He was a truly incredible person whose love for his family and friends was unsurpassable. He will dearly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

On Monday, June 25, 2018, Lindberg transitioned from our midst to his eternal home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roosevelt Gaines, and three children, Itra Gaines, Melvin Gaines, and Elton Hill.

His memory will be forever cherished by his devoted children, Lindberg (Sheryl) Gaines, Jr., Michael Oliver Gaines, Lynette Gaines, and Pamela Gaines all of Daytona Beach, FL, and Donna Willis of Albany, GA; two sisters, Bessie L. Gaines Smith of Albany, GA and Yvonne L. Gaines Griffin of Atlanta, GA; a maternal uncle, Carter H. Christian of Albany, GA; 22 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special great granddaughter and buddy, Nijah (Lora) Glover; his "ride or die" partner, John (Chuckie) Bolden; and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends.
