Lula Mae Gilbert, beloved daughter of the late Turner Gilbert, Jr. and Minnie Lee Davis Gilbert was born in Blakely, Georgia on April 6, 1951.
She received her formal education in the public schools of Dougherty Cunty graduating from Monroe High School.
Havin professed her belief and faith in the Lord as a youth she was baptized and received th "right hand of fellowship" into the body of Christ. She was a faithful member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church who willingly worked wherever needed.
Lula was a very independent person who had an everlasting lover for her child and grandkids. Those who encountered her often described her as a caring, hardworking mother who provided unconditionally for her community. For more than 20 years, she was a loyal and dedicated employee of Western Sizzlin. No matter what the task, she took great pride in a job well done.
Lula was affectionately called Ma Lula by a host of people in the community and family. She was a source of encouragement and joy to everyone she met. She had a heart of gold and impacted many lives and families in the community. Her home was a revolving door for family and friends and they all loved her dearly. A couple of her joys was cooking, shelling peas, cutting greens and babysitting kids. Her table was always spread with family and also with anyone in need. Lula had an extremely passionate for helping anyone and family. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of being a part of her life.
On Tuesday, June 20, 2023 Lula quietly transitioned to eternal rest. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine siblings, James E. Gilbert, Emory Gilbert, Fred E. Gilbert, Alfonzo Gilbert, Marcus T. Gilbert, Ralph Gilbert, Betty J. Gilbert, and Georgia M. G. Hilson.
Loving memories will forever be cherished by her child, Rickey B. Gilbert (Edythe "Teresa" ); longtime partner, Elgue Hayward; her grandchildren, Octavia Gilbert, Talisa Gilbert, Rashaad Griffin, Jayla Gilbert, and Kaylah Gilbert; her sibling, Pinkie Moore, Pearlene Gilbert, Latrica Gilbert, Jacquelyn (Jeffery) McDowell, and Christopher Johnson; sister-in-law, Thelma Gilbert; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
