Dr. Lula Harper was born in Thomaston, GA to Augustus and Rosie Carter on June 2, 1950.
Lula met the love of her life, Artis Harper in Buffalo, NY. They were wed on December 20, 1975. Three children were hand-picked by this union.
Lula accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Friendship Baptist Church in Lincoln Park, Thomaston, Ga. Lula served God as a Sunday School and Bible Study teacher at Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, IA before she accepted God's call to minister. She served as Assistant Pastor at First Baptist church in Marion, Iowa for two years before moving to Georgia in 1995. The Harper family joined Mt Zion Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia in November of that year. At Mt. Zion, Rev. Harper served many ministries including, Bible Study, Vacation Bible School, Youth Praise Dance, Summer Enrichment Program, Cradle Roll Ministry, and Children's Church.
Lula was a life-long learner and devoted many years to furthering her knowledge and education. She was a graduate of Drake High School; Erie Community College; Medaille College; University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, where she earned her Master of Divinity; Bethany Bible College, where she earned her Doctorate in Biblical Studies; and Troy University, where she earned a second Masters Degree in Education.
Lula had a profound love for helping people. This love was evident through both her personal life and her professional career. At home, she opened her doors and her heart to many family, friends and exchange students, and foster children. Professionally, Lula was a counselor at Foundation II Youth Shelter, Kirkwood Community College, Albany Rural Clinic and Turner Job Corps. She was a Chaplain at Pelham YDC, Lee State Prison and Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. After retirement, Lula went back to work as a Paraprofessional and Long-Term Substitute teacher for the Dougherty County School System.
Lula leaves to cherish her memory: Her Loving Mother and closest friend, Rosie Mae Carter of Thomaston, GA; A Loving and Devoted Husband, Artis Harper; three Wonderful children: Martin (Crystal) Harper of Augusta, GA; Angel (Barry) Barrymore of Jacksonville, FL; and Arin Harper of Albany, GA; seven grandchildren: Micha, Troy, Miranda, Melina, Makaila, Carter and Harper; two brothers: John (Susan) Carter of Griffin, GA; Dane (Judy) Carter of Hopkins, SC; A Special Foster Daughter, Alicia Rogers and her children of Cedar Rapids, IA; Three God-children: Tamika Harris, Crystal (Benny) Quetel, and Christopher Hicks; Two Sister Friends: Rhonda Hicks and Joan Blackmon; Two cousins she took under her wing: Kyle Carter and Terrance Brown; Several chosen extended family members; And a host of family and friends.
