Obituary

Luther R. Lane Luther was born November 1, 1966, to Annie Hamrick-Lane and the late Richard Lane in Newark, New Jersey.

After relocating to Georgia at a young age with his mother and siblings, he received his early childhood and secondary education in the Wilkes County School System, including Washington-Wilkes High School.  Throughout school, Luther was a perceptive, astute young man with an insatiable appetite for knowledge and a developing passion for law enforcement.  He valued education and took advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow.

As Luther's passion escalated, he realized that there was a unique "calling" upon his life—a call for service to others, the protection of communities, and making a difference.   Consequently, he moved to Albany, Georgia to pursue his life-long passion of becoming a law enforcement officer.  Being an officer defined Luther.  He was employed as a Campus Police Officer at Albany State University for numerous years and distinguished himself as a stellar officer through his performance.  In 1994, he was recommended to attend the police academy where he soared through the training program.  As an employee of the Dougherty County Sherriff's Department for more than 25 years, Luther was a mountain of a man.  He was an exceptional police officer with an unmatched work ethic and drive; who gave 100% all of the time; and served with distinction.  He was the kind of guy that never met a stranger and could talk to anybody while maintaining a calmness about him that often resulted in the de-escalation of a confrontational situation.  That is the realm in which Sgt. Luther R. Lane operated every day—there wasn't very much that he couldn't or wouldn't do to keep the city/county safe, to improve the quality of life for young kids, and to make a difference in the community.  During his years of service, Luther wore many hats and titles, including G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Officer, D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer, CHAMPS Summer Program Mentor, Jail Detention Officer, Juvenile Probate Officer, and Sergeant with the Crime Prevention and Intervention Unit.  He was respected and revered for his abilities.  During off-duty time, he often worked as a private security officers at various venues.

Luther's devotion to his law enforcement career was only surpassed by his deep commitment to his family.  He was an awesome father, a selfless and loving son, a doting grandfather (papa police), a committed brother, a naturing uncle, and a loyal cousin who loved his family with all his heart.  He was full of life, love, and kindness; nevertheless, he was never short on a joke or perfectly timed comic relief.  Sharing time with family and friends was among his greatest treasures.  Luther was not interested in fame or fortune; he was interested in making a difference.  Just as the community supported him, he also supported numerous community and civic organizations, functions, and activities, including membership in Energy Lodge #145, Al Rakim Temple #142, Albany Masonic District #11, Joe Lee Chapter #43, Albany Consistory #176, DemBois, and serving as a little league coach and sports referee.  He enjoyed all sports and was a die-hard Pittsburg Steelers fan.

A man of great faith and belief in Christ Jesus, Luther attended First Monumental Faith Ministries under the leadership and guidance of Pastor Roosevelt Carter, Sr., and Pastor RoDerald L. Carter.  He was a strong man of God who remained steadfast and unmovable throughout life.  To know him was to dearly love him.

As it was appointed unto men once to die, Luke/Luther/Sgt. Lane kept his appointment on May 27, 2021, at Northside Hospital in Cummings, Georgia.  He was predeceased by his father and one daughter, Chasity Lane. Though his earthly departure leaves a void, his life and service will never be forgotten.  Rest well our King!

Cherished memories will forever remain with his beloved daughters, Asya Lane, Le'Deadra (Zac) Anderson, Charity Lane, and Kassidy Cooper; his devoted mother, Annie Hamrick-Lane; siblings,  Calvin Lane, Kenneth (Julia) Lane, Keith Lane, Leon Lane, Shaun (Lafaye) Lane, Brenda (Marcus) Zellars, Sasha (Willie) Lane-Smith, and Angel Wimberley; grandchildren, Ziyah, Zac, Zakia, Carsyn, Jayce, Nolan, Heaven, Kayson, and Kharter; and a myriad of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, and friends.
