IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marvin
Dickerson
February 10, 1949 – February 21, 2024
Marvin Dickerson was born in Newton, Georgia on February 10, 1949. He was the beloved son of the late Howard Dickerson and Viola White Tift.
He received his early childhood and secondary education in the Dougherty County School System, graduating from Monroe High School in 1967. While at Monroe, Marvin was an exceptionally inquisitive and perceptive young man who developed a passion for carpentry and masonry; gained valuable technical and industrial skills; garnered much from his educational experiences; and actively engaged in numerous student-centered activities. He valued education and took advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow. Marvin continued his quest for knowledge at Albany Area Vocational-Technical School where he completed the Construction (Carpentry/Masonry) Program of Study.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a faithful member of River Road (now Gaines Avenue) Church of Christ who remained steadfast in Christian stewardship.
A proud patriot and Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Marvin served his country valiantly and with distinction. He was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, including the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and three Silver Stars; the Sharpshooter and Good Conduct Medals; and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Army National Medal, among his many other accomplishments as he advanced through the ranks. At the close of his final military assignment, he was recognized for his gallantry and years of active duty service; received an honorable discharge; and returned home to civilian life.
Marvin was united in holy matrimony to Elizabeth Ann Baldwin. Together, they embarked on a life filled with love and true devotion to each other. Through the years, he proved to be a mighty fortress, a strong tower, and a true anchor to his wife. Their union was blessed with loving children who were taught to love God and love each other. Marvin delighted himself in supporting his family in all their endeavors. As a husband, father, and grandfather, he showered his family with unconditional love and often sacrificed his needs for their good.
In his professional career, teaching the construction trades at his high school alma mater proved to be his greatest accomplishment. Marvin was immensely committed to education even through some times of challenge and headaches. He once stated to colleagues, "My greatest rewards are seeing our young men grow up and become good and productive citizens in our community." Yes, he was very proud of his students and their eagerness to master carpentry and masonry skills. Marvin's teaching extended beyond the classroom. He led by example; provided love and support to anyone in need; never met a stranger; and he was accepting and forgiving. Over the years, he modeled his life after 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." He was an inspiring example of a successful businessman, mentor, and role model who generously gave his time and talents to help others.
Marvin's many, varied personal interests are difficult to sum up in just a few sentences, but he is best known for his culinary expertise that earned him the coveted title of "grill master extraordinaire"—one who put his heart and soul into his succulent creations. He was highly sought after at the Monroe Alumni tailgate celebration where he graciously and generously served bold and memorable flavored dishes to hundreds of attendees. He cherished the time spent with former classmates, students, and friends and always looked forward to the next year's event. Marvin was full of life, love, and kindness; was a great humorist, conversationalist, and philosopher; and the best husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin or friend anyone could ever hope for.
On February 21, 2024, surrounded by his wife, Marvin transitioned from this earthly life to be with the Lord. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by daughter, Renee Dickerson..
Loving memories will forever be cherished by his devoted wife and best friend, Elizabeth Ann Dickerson; his children, Alan Dickerson, Tammie Baxter, Concetta Dickerson, Tabatha Baldwin, Yolanda Dickerson, and ShaToya Mitchell; his granddaughter, Ashley Baldwin; great granddaughters, Charley Anne and Brailey Lynn Rodney; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Brown, Gail Johnson, Trynni Williams and Ethel Baldwin; brothers-in-law, Samuel Brown and Darrell Baldwin; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, neighbors, and friends.
