Mary Lee Holsey was born in Albany, Georgia on December 17, 1942. She was the beloved daughter of the late Members and Viola Bell Holsey.
During the early years of her life, she attended the public schools of Dougherty County and was actively involved in numerous school organizations and activities.
At an early age, she professed her faith and belief in Christ and united with the First Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She was an active and dedicated member, and served faithfully on the usher board until her health declined. When standing at the doors of the church, there was always a smile on her face when greeting the congregation. When sickness began to enter her body and she was not able to stand the whole time, she was seen still trying to do the work of the Lord. Mary realized through it all that the joy of the Lord was her strength.
Mary was a persistent, hardworking individual who took great pride in her work. She was an exceptionally talented cook and her culinary skills were put to test daily through her employment at Blackbeard's. Over the years, she was widely acclaimed for her soulful recipes—especially her signature "chicken dressing." She retired after innumerable years of loyal and dedicated service.
Family and friends were Mary's greatest cherished gifts. She was a deeply caring and compassionate person whose life was filled with service to others. Her keen, one-of-a-kind personality attracted a wide circle of people who became the recipients of a long, loving, and lasting friendship. Mary enjoyed many things in life; but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren who truly captured her heart. Her love of family and their love of her will forever be admired and treasured.
On Friday, April 6, 2018, Mary peacefully transitioned from this earthly life to be reunited with loved ones that passed before her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings, Ethel H. Redding, David Holsey, and Elijah J. Holsey.
She leaves to cherish her fondest memories two sons, Ronald E. (Janice) Holsey of Albany, GA and Demetrius L. (Charesse) Holsey of Decatur, AL; two sisters, Ella K. Murray and Mattie H. (Jimmy Sr.) Harden of Albany, GA; daughter-in-law, Merry D. L. Holsey of Lake Villa, IL; four godchildren, Patricia Walker, Michael A. Edwards, Jr., Nicholas Walker, and Jasmine Whitaker all of Albany, GA; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
