Obituary

Mrs. Mary Emma Walker was born in Albany, Georgia on January 4, 1935. She was the beloved daughter of the late Henry Lee and Emma Williams.

Her thirst for knowledge began at a very early age. She could often be found in her favorite hiding place surrounded by books that ranged from classical literature to sewing. She was always eager to share what she had learned with others. Mrs. Walker received her high school diploma from Monroe Comprehensive High School at the age of 16 and later attended Albany State College (ASU). She graduated with her bachelor's degree in Education in 1955. While at ASU, Mrs. Walker pledged the Delta Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., as a member of the very first line to cross in the chapter.

After graduation, she began her teaching career at Hillcrest Elementary School in Sylvester, GA, and later became employed at Worth County Middle and High Schools. During her tenure, Mrs. Walker furthered her education and obtained a Master's degree in Education from Florida A & M University. She continued to teach and later became a guidance counselor at Worth County High School. After serving in that capacity for numerous years, she then transferred to the Dougherty County School System, Dougherty Comprehensive High School, where she worked as a guidance counselor until her retirement in 1990.

During Mrs. Walker's early years, she met her future husband, Mr. Fred Walker, Jr., who insisted that he would one day marry her. His dream came true on December 24, 1954, when they wed in holy matrimony. To this union, three children were born—Deidra in 1960, Frederick in 1979, and Emma in 1981.

Mrs. Walker remained a lifelong learner and enjoyed completing crossword puzzles in pen. She was also an avid sewer. She had a servant's heart and felt most content when helping others, especially students.

On October 21, 2018, Mrs. Walker peacefully transitioned to eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joseph Houston; and the love of her life, Mr. Fred Walker, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her life and memory three children, Deidra Antonia (Kenny) Ferguson of St. Petersburg, FL, Frederick Joseph (Wanetta) Walker of Atlanta, GA, and Emma Leigh Walker of Albany, GA; three grandchildren, Erika Walker, Elijah Walker, and Aaron Walker; one great granddaughter, Dejanee Walker; a devoted nephew and niece, Joseph T. Walker and Delothia Anthony; four other nieces and nephews, Demetrius Jordan, Freddie Walker, Gwen Calloway, and John Lewis; 15 great nieces and nephews; 12 great-great nieces and nephews; a host of cousins; and three "adopted" children, Brandon Gerard Henry, Kenya Taiwan Lemon, and Kaleena Anice Gee.

Mrs. Mary Emma Walker will truly be missed and fondly remembered by one of her favorite sayings, "Take care of you because no one else will."
