Obituary

Mathis Seay, Sr., affectionately known as Sonny, was born in Sylvester, Georgia on April 4, 1941.  He was the beloved son of John Seay, Sr. and Floyzelle Jones.

While Mathis' education level was limited to his elementary school years, he was a life-long learner with a strong curiosity and an internal desire to learn and grow.  At age 57, he completed a literacy program to help him read his bible and hymn book.

During his early years, Mathis worked as a farmer and roofer.  He was highly motivated, persistent, and conscientious individual who gave his very best—no matter what the task.  In later years, he joined the ranks of employees at Coats and Clark of Albany.  Throughout his 29 years of service, he never shied away from hard work; constantly met or exceeded department goals; and eagerly provided assistance to fellow workers.  Upon retirement, he was lauded as a loyal, dedicated employee who rendered outstanding and unparalleled service.

Not only was Mathis a hardworking employee and provider, he was also a faithful and loving husband to Betty Jean Patterson for over 60 years; a strong anchor and tower for his children; and a committed and loyal friend to many.  He strongly believed in unconditional love and offered much time and attention to the daily lives of his family. Whether needing advice, a listening ear, or just casual conversation, they all knew that he was always available to hear them out and offer a steady hand.  Mathis enjoyed fishing, cooking, and making people laugh.  He could always find a silver lining in any situation.

On May 27, 2025, Mathis transitioned from this earthly life.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Patterson, in January 2021; his daughter, Dorothy Mills; and eight siblings, Willie Lee DeJohn, Julia Mae Seay, Mary Helen McCullough, Mary Francis Dassie, Martha Ann Seay,  John Seay, Jr., Willie Frank Seay, and Johnny Will Seay.

Precious memories will forever be cherished by his devoted children, Mathis (Darlene) Seay, Jr., Patricia Boges, Karen (Ralph) Keaton, and Michael (Shirley) Seay; 3 siblings, Mary Will Gammage, Ozella Cleveland, and Edward Charles Seay; 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Charlie Dassie; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
