Obituary

Mattie Pearl Harris was born in Opelika, Alabama June 3, 1942. She was the youngest of six children in the union of the late Reverend Warren Calloway and Mattie Sanford Calloway.

She received her early childhood and secondary education in the Lee County School System, graduating from J. W. Darden High School.

Mattie's spiritual journey began at a young age when she confessed Christ, was baptized, and became a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church.

In later years, she united with Prayer Temple Church in New York where she served faithfully as an usher and a member of the choir. Upon moving to Albany, Georgia, she activated the principles of the church covenant and united with New True Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. There, she served as a Deaconess and Mother of the Church, and sang in the choir. Mattie loved her ministries and firmly believed that because the Lord called her to duty—to serve was truly an honor.

Mattie was united in holy matrimony to Willie Roy Johnson. Together, they worked to provide a loving and supportive Christian home for their six children. She was a devoted wife and mother who diligently cared for the needs of her family. Given a second chance at love, Mattie met and married Charlie Harris.

Their union was strong as they honored their vows to love and cherish each other.

A very persistent and conscientious individual, Mattie engaged in very diverse, yet rewarding work experiences, including Truelon Curtain Factory and Kmart. She was a loyal and committed employee who never shield away from hard work, was a top-notch organizer, and worked untiringly to meet company standards. No matter what the task, she always gave her BEST! She retired after rendering years of unparalleled service. In her leisure she enjoyed listening to music, reading, crocheting, and coloring.

Family and friends were her among her greatest cherished gifts and she dearly treasured the time spent with them. Her endearing spirit will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched with her laughter, generosity and motherly understanding.

On December 7, 2023, Mattie peacefully transitioned to eternal rest and peace with the Lord. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two children, Melvin Johnson and Demetrius Johnson; and three siblings, Nathaniel Calloway, Mary Dunn, and Warner Mae Bass.

Cherished memories will forever remain with her children, Michael (Agnes) Johnson of Albany, GA, Nathaniel (Naomi) Johnson of St. Robert MO, Donald (Vanessa) Johnson of Somers Point, NJ, and Regina Johnson; siblings, Mack
(Carrie) Calloway and Mildred Carr; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends .
