Melvin Scott was born on July 25, 1955 at his grandparents' home in Doles (Worth County) GA to the late Earl and Ruby Lee Dudley Scott. He departed this life on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at his residence in McDonough, Ga.
As a child Melvin earned the nickname "Catman" for quickly running errands for the senior ladies in the community. They said he was "quick as a cat" and from then on he was affectionately called "Cat" or "Catman". Church and Faith were paramount in Melvin's life. In 1965, as a 10 year old, Melvin confessed Christ, was baptized and became a member of Eureka Missionary Baptist Church. He served faithfully and dutifully on the Senior Usher Board for many years.
Melvin was educated in the Calhoun County school system, attending Anderson Elementary, HT Singleton High School and Calhoun County High School. He was a proud member of the Class of 1973 and forever a Cougar!
Melvin stayed in close touch with many of his classmates his entire life. He looked forward to all class reunions and any other opportunity to interact with his classmates. Athletics played a big part in Melvin's early years. His excelled in basketball and the 1972 Boys State Basketball
Championship was the highlight of his career. Melvin was the Captain and Most Valuable Player for the 1973 season. He loved the 70's era of high school basketball when he and his brothers, cousins, and sister garnered MVP awards. This was his favorite topic of conversation!
After graduation Melvin embarked on a 22 year career in the US Army, enlisting in 1977 and retiring in 1999 as a Sargent First Class Telecommunications Specialist Supervisor. As a Soldier, Melvin enjoyed traveling the world, learning new skills and most importantly, making another set of lifelong friendships. Upon retirement from the military, Melvin joined corporate America and worked in telecommunications with AT&T for before entering into a second retirement.
Melvin always had a deep and abiding love for his family. He was a dutiful son who adored his mother and idolized his father his entire life. He was especially close to his siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Melvin was preceded in death by his big brother Anthony who was a best friend and companion, grandparents Rosa and Nixon Dudley and Lula Scott, brother-in-law Roy Engram and sister-in-law Dorothy Scott.
Precious memories will be held by his brothers and best friends William Earl Scott of Leary, Ga, Leonard Scott of Lithonia, Ga, Jerry Scott of McDonough Ga, and Mack (Sherilyn) Scott of Albany, Ga. His loving, devoted sisters, Debra Scott-Engram of Albany, Ga, Cathy Scott-Jackson (Jeffery) of Stockbridge, Ga, Rosemary Scott-Carter (Samuel) of Shiloh, Il, Vivian Dubose (Ronnie) of Deltona, Fl. and sister in love, Geneva Oliver Scott of Albany, Ga.
Loving Aunts surviving Melvin are Mary Scott Oliver, Johnnie Virginia Nelson, Barbara Dudley, Grace Dudley and Pearline Scott. Melvin was a devoted uncle to his many nieces and nephews. They all had a special bond with the "favorite Uncle" who never failed to remember birthdays, graduations, and all other special occasions. His nieces and nephews were the biggest fans of his famous baked beans!
