IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Melvin
Sims
April 11, 1957 – August 3, 2019
Melvin Sims, beloved son of Mary Sims and the late Nathaniel Maddox, was born in Albany, Georgia on April 11, 1957.
He received his formal education in the Dougherty County Public School System, including Monroe High School where he participated in various school functions and activities.
From a very young age, Melvin was nurtured in the Word of God. As a youth, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and united with the Beulah Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend James H. Reynolds.
Melvin, who was fondly known throughout South Albany—especially Jefferson Street and M. L. King, Jr. Drive, lived a full, enjoyable life and was well regarded and respected by many. To know him was to truly love him. He had a special way of getting to know people and becoming a part of their lives. He was a down-to-earth, humble man who was a source of encouragement to everyone he met. His friendliness and kindness to all people, his willingness to lend a helping hand, his love for his community, and his devotion to his family and friends are lasting tributes to the beauty of his heart and soul. He laughed often, felt unbridled happiness, and loved unconditionally. One of his finest qualities was gratitude. Even in the midst of life's ups and downs, he was always grateful for every good thing that came his way.
Melvin wore many hats in his lifetime. He was an incredible son, a loving brother, a caring uncle, a devoted cousin, and an unforgettable friend. Over the years, he enjoyed spending time with his family; watching television; visiting neighbors and businesses in the area; or just lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Melvin was very committed to fitness and made exercise a part of his daily routine. After donning one of his many hats and caps, he could always be seen walking in the community and along his usual route—Jefferson and M. L. King. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of being a part of his life.
On August 3, 2019, Melvin was called home to rest. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Sims and Charles Sims.
He leaves fond memories and a legacy of love to be cherished by his loving mother Mary Sims; siblings, Lisa S. Roper, Kimberly Sims, Curtis Sims, Kenneth Sims, Robert Bullard, Sr. and Olin (Valeria) Bryant; aunts, Lucille S. Daniels, Ocie Hunt, Kathleen (Claude) Whitmire, Brenda Bedell, Eva Callaway, and Antionette (Melvin) Hightower; uncles, George Mims and James Maddox; nieces, Tyneshia More who was like a daughter, Nikendra Bynum, Taniyah Martin, Kaitlynn McCray, and Pamela Frazier; nephews, Amerigo Hampton and Montrez West; and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends.
