Obituary

Mr. Melvin Hightower, Sr. was born September 6, 1938 to the late George Hightower, Sr. and Nola Daniels Hightower in Cuthbert, GA. When he was very young his family moved to Dawson, GA where he received his education.

It is nearly impossible to sum a man's life in a few short paragraphs. The impact that one has in life is far reaching. Such is the case for Melvin Hightower, Sr. who departed this earth in the early morning hours of July 8, 2019.  He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Robinson Hightower; his children, Audrey Anderson, Melva Hightower, Lisa Hightower, Melvin Hightower, Jr and Eric Hightower; his grandchildren, Whitney Hightower, Jasmine Anderson, Tyler Hightower, Eryka Hightower and Bailey Hightower; and his great grandchild, Londynne Hightower. He is also survived by his brothers Eldred Hightower, Willie Fred Jones, Edward Jones, Aaron Jones and his sister Barbara Willis. He was preceded in death by his mother Nola Jones, his elder brothers Alton Hightower and George Hightower, Jr. as well as his youngest sister Jimmie Hightower. He also leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Melvin began his foray into adulthood by joining the army. A rather severe injury incurred while in service shortened his career, so he was honorably discharged in September 1957.  Blessed with a strong work ethic, he was employed in a variety of jobs before making his way to Philadelphia, PA in the early 1960's.  He met a young woman named Christine who would become his wife.  They stayed in Philadelphia and grew a family resulting in five children.  Christine Hightower preceded him in death on April 20, 2011.

Melvin always wanted to return home; so upon retiring from his career as a General Contractor in 2015, he moved to Albany, Georgia.  Upon his return, he was baptized into the body of Christ and remained a faithful member of the Church of Christ at Gaines Avenue until his demise.  Having reconnected with Carolyn Robinson after his return to Albany, they were joined in marriage on June 6, 2016.  He enjoyed his new life and the extensions to his family that included Carolyn's daughter,  Stephanie; son, Barry Sr.; and granddaughter, Brittney.

Melvin's impact on the lives of others can be found on the sidewalks he cemented, the houses he worked on, the wisdom he imparted and the lessons that he taught all of his children. He shall be missed.
