IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mollie
Hawkins
February 7, 1938 – May 23, 2024
-Sister Mollie Hawkins was born April 7, 1938 in Newton Georgia to the late Horace and Viola Hawkins. She was one of fourteen children.
-In 1959 she became a mother to her one and only child, Charles Winston Hawkins in Newton Georgia. As a single mother, she re-located to Queens, NY where she raised Charles with a stern but abundant love. She provided a spiritual and stable home, rich with all the things that mattered. Their bond is a shining example of love, devotion and respect. As a family, they attended Morning Star Baptist church in Queens NY where Sister Mollie was actively involved until she returned to Georgia in 1994.
-As a young mother in the early 1960's Sister Mollie became a Certified Nurses Aide at Queens General Hospital. Through hard work and perseverance she advanced her career further by becoming an EKG Technician supervisor. She maintained this successful career until her retirement in 1994.
-Upon her retirement Sister Mollie left NY and returned to the place of her birth, Newton Georgia. She immediately became involved in her longtime family church-Thankful Missionary Baptist Church. Referred to affectionately as "The General" at Thankful, Sister Mollie wore many hats. She was a proud member of the choir, taught Sunday school and Bible study, and held early morning prayer at the church. Sister Mollie volunteered in the church kitchen, drove the church van, and cleaned the church for a year. She served as treasurer, ordered books for the church and distributed them too. She served as a missionary and was an active member of the Newton Baptist Association. In addition, she helped prepare delegates for union meetings of the Women's conventions and Sunday School conventions.
-Sister Mollie rarely sat still. She found the time to volunteer at local prisons in NY and Georgia to offer spiritual comfort and prayer to those incarcerated. She was a poll worker, active in voter registration throughout Georgia, and a seamstress who made quilts and other products for Southern Journeys-a worker owned company that works to empower Black Women in Georgia to advocate for economic and social justice.
-Throughout her life, Sister Mollie lived in service to others. Always available to offer a ride, or be company to someone else, lend an ear, give a warm hug or a kind word, she always gave of herself. Close friends, family, acquaintances and even bank employees who were all lucky enough to sample her delicious banana bread felt the gift of comfort and love she offered in every bite.
-In addition to her life of service was her gift of friendship. Sister Mollie had many friends from all areas of her life and had the gift of making each one feel special. She loved to dine out, travel and seek new adventures with her solid cast of running buddies, whom she adored and who adored her. She lived a wonderful, full content life.
-Early Thursday morning on May 23rd, Sister Mollie's earthly journey ended as she quietly entered into eternal rest. Her son, daughter in law and brother were all at her side and holding her hand as she transitioned. Since learning of her time of passing, some have said they were awakened at that unusual hour by the sounds of beautiful music playing. Anyone who knew her, knows there is nothing she loved more than to serve her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Let her memory, her faith and her kindness be an inspiration to us all.
-Sister Mollie Hawkins is survived by her loving and devoted son Charles Winston Hawkins, her daughter in law Sally Hawkins, three grandchildren who brought her endless pride and joy; Tiara-Kerrin Marie Hawkins, Charles Winston Hawkins II, and Tyler Nicole Hawkins, and her great grandson Capriece Charles Hawkins, who made her heart smile. She also leaves two brothers to remember her. Her youngest brother Tommie Hawkins and Bobby Hawkins who called his sister "My Rock" and who left his home in Camden NJ to be by her side until she passed. She also leaves close to one hundred nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, special neighbors and many friends too numerous to mention by name.
-Waiting to greet Sister Mollie in Heaven are her aforementioned parents, her siblings; Orilla, Mary, Addie, Horace, Raymond, Alonzo, Elaine, Eva, Ida, Julian, and Jeanett and many other loved ones.
-On behalf of Sister Mollie Hawkins: May God Bless Each and Every One of You.
