Obituary

On April 17, 2020, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, God paid a visit to His servant who had finished her labor in this earthly vineyard. Death unexpectedly took Nervine Smith from her family, but Jesus took the beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt away from death. He said, "Come on home, my good and faithful servant." Her eyes are closed; her heart is no longer beating; her sweet voice is stilled, and her warm arms can no longer embrace us, but we will forever have a love that is as eternal as her rest.

Nervine was born on October 22, 1946, in Leesburg, Georgia, to the late Walter and Johnnie Mae Smith. She graduated from Lee County High School in 1964. After growing into womanhood, she fell in love and married James Smith, an Army man, who would be a life-long partner for 53 years. This union afforded her the opportunity to live in foreign countries, including Germany. Nervine also pursued a career as a dental assistant, a field in which she worked as she traveled with her husband while he was in the Army. She always believed that God had given her three special gifts when He blessed them with three children--Erical Hall,   Albany, GA; Janice (Andrew) Garnto of Thomaston, GA; and Timothy Smith of Poughkeepsie, NY. Not taking their blessing lightly, it was important in the Smith home that their children were trained-up to love God and family. As a mother, Nervine instilled Christian values, and the importance of remaining rooted in faith in all seasons. As a wife, she was committed to family first and was dedicated to serving their needs.

Born into a family of seven, Nervine would be preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Whatever trials confronted her, Nervine rejoiced in God's spirit of love, power, grace, and mercy. Therefore, her house was always a place of welcome, warmth, and comfort. To her children, she was a nurturing, gentle and loving mother. To her husband, she was the love of his life, an ever-present friend and partner.

Known for her beautiful garden and flower beds, Nervine took pride in the fruit of her labor. She loved talking with friends and family and laughing. She was able to find something funny in everything. She loved funny commercials and uplifting others. She was a generous person and found joy in sharing the bounty of her vegetables from her garden with family and friends. Foremost in her life was serving the Lord. While she was a member of New Piney Grove Baptist Church of Leesburg, Georgia, she fellowshipped with the Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Oakfield, Georgia.

Nervine leaves to celebrate her life a loving husband, three children, her sister Angie (Andrew) Atkins, Leesburg, Ga.; her grandchildren Erynn Hall and Emory Garnto; her goddaughters, Adrianne Weltner and Quamea Daniels, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
