Obituary

Otis Charles Boyd was born in Albany, Georgia on December 30, 1949.  He was the beloved son of the late Eugene Boyd, Sr. and Mable Dudley-Boyd.

He was educated in the Dougherty County School System, graduating from Monroe High School in 1968.  While at Monroe, he actively participated in numerous student organizations and activities,.

Throughout his childhood, Otis was nurtured in the Word of God.  As a youth, he began his journey with the Lord at Union Missionary Baptist Church.  He later united with Bible Way Baptist Church where he served as an usher and sang in the choir.  His faith never wavered and he remained spiritually strong.

Otis believed strongly in allegiance and commitment to his country.  He enlisted in the United States Army where he became a "soldier to the core."  The military suited his sense of order and his  code of loyalty—the discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left.   At the close of his tour of duty having served with distinction, he received an honorable discharge.  Upon returning to civilian life, he joined the police force in New York.  He later returned to Albany, Georgia where he continued his career at Albany State University for numerous years.

Often described as a mild-mannered, good-hearted individual, Otis lived a full and enjoyable life.  He had a mind that never ceased questioning, a serious twinkle in his eyes, and a heart that opened freely to family and friends. His genuine warmth and generosity made him special to all who came in contact with him.  Otis had an endless reservoir of love for his children, grandchildren, and his special dog pal—Scrappy.  He was a loving father, nurturing grandfather, supportive uncle, cherished cousin, and unforgettable friend who will be deeply missed.

On August 25, 2022, Otis faced the sunset of his earthly life at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

He leaves treasured memories that will forever remain in the hearts of his children, Michelle (James) Blue, Michaela (Eddie) Gerhartz, and Spencer Boyd; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; his long-time companion, Mona Moore; sister-in-law, Shirley Boyd; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
