Richard Gillison, thirteenth child of the late Mabel Ellis Gillison and Zack Gillison, Sr., was born June 15, 1949, in Albany, Georgia.
He attended the public schools of Dougherty County, graduating from Monroe High School in the class of 1967.
From a very early age, Richard was immersed in the Baptist Christian community that became his lifelong support. Over the years, he attended numerous churches in the community.
Throughout life, Richard had an adventurous spirit. He was a military enthusiast who served his country in the United States Air Force with valor and honor for four years. While in the military, Richard met and married Vonzie Jinks Harris and they were blessed with one son—Darian. In later years, he was united in marriage to Marie Lewis. Not only was he a brave and loyal soldier, but a patient and loving husband and father as well.
Richard was a valued employee of the United Postal Service for many years. He believed strongly in working hard for what you want, being willing to do the right thing, and making sure that no task was left undone.
"Gego" as he was affectionately called was a mild-mannered, good-hearted individual and a source of encouragement to many people. He was also a kind, loving friend to the dogs and cats who often found refuge at his home. He had an everlasting love for family and friends and truly enjoyed spending time with them. His gigantic smile and fun-loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who loved him dearly.
On Thursday, August 30, 2018, Richard departed this life peacefully at the Wynnfield Park Nursing Home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Rollin and seven other siblings; brothers-in-law, Paul Jones and Willie C. Haines; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Gillison.
He leaves fond memories to be cherished by his sons, Deacon Rickey (Edythe) Gilbert of Leesburg, GA and Darian (Valerie) Gillison of Albany, GA; daughter, Gia Gillison of New Jersey; stepson, Richard Lewis; sisters, Linda (James) Hines, Shirley (Charles) Luster, Louise (Harrison) Jones, and Elizabeth Jones all of Albany, GA, and Rosie Mae Haines of Newton, GA; two brothers, Zack Gillison, Jr. of Roswell GA and Johnny (Patricia) Gillison of Albany, GA; ten grandchildren; a special friend, Peaches Harvey; sister-in-law, Margaret Gillison Clark; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends.
