Obituary

Robert Lee Whitsett was born in Leesburg, Georgia on December 23, 1951.  He was the beloved son of the late John and Phenia Whitsett.

He received his formal education in the Lee County School System, graduating from Lee County High School.  Throughout school, he was a very bright and inquisitive young man who garnered much from his educational experiences while actively participating in numerous student activities and events.  In later years, he furthered his education at Albany Technical Institute in Computer Programming.

Very early in life, Robert was nurtured in the Word of God.  He began his season of Christian stewardship at the First Albany Deliverance Cathedral.  Later, he continued his walk with the Lord at House of Prayer by Faith Church.  Robert was a man of great faith and belief in Christ Jesus and remained steadfast while attending The Real Church.  Having been blessed with the gift of music at a young age, he became the bass guitarist for the "Southern Quintets" gospel group.  He was an extremely talented individual who gave his all to the Glory of God.

Robert  was united in marriage to Cherry Ann Mosely.  Their union was blessed with two children—Belinda and Tomico.  He later married Diane Killings who preceded him in death.  They were blessed with four children—James, Michele, Robin, and Robert Jr.  Pops, as he was endearingly called, was a devoted father who taught his children to love God, to be humble and respectful, and to always love and care for each other.  He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments.

A very industrious, persistent individual, Robert was no stranger to hard work and gave his best at everything he did.  For innumerable years, he worked tirelessly at Firestone Tire and Rubber Plant  until its closing.  After earning his computer programming credentials, he relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he joined the ranks of employees at IBM as a computer programmer.  Robert excelled highly in his career and never shied away from a challenge.  Daily he poured himself into his work; always giving his best.  Upon  retirement, he was lauded for his expertise, high expectations, unquestionable integrity, and perseverance.  Longing to reconnect with family and friends, he moved back to Albany, Georgia and began the "rest  and recreation"  chapter of his life.

Pops really knew what it meant to have a life well lived.  He was deeply devoted to his family and friends; provided love and support for anyone in need; never met a stranger; and always found a silver lining in every situation.  His heart was filled with kindness, care, and compassion for all that he encountered.  In his leisure, he enjoyed fishing; playing the guitar, and spending time with family and friends.  He will be sorely missed by all who were blessed by his friendship and love.

On May 14, 2024, Robert transitioned from this earthly life to eternal peace and rest.  In addition to his parents and his wife Diane, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, Mary Smith, Jesse Whitsett, James Whitsett, Cora Whitsett, Minnie Carter, Lula Green, Flora Deariso, and John Whitsett.

Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of his children, Belinda (Reginald) Cladd, James (Precious) McCoy, Tomico (Larry) Prince, Michelle Thomas, Robin (Rodrick) Curry, and Robert (Kimberly) Whitsett, Jr.; grandchildren, Brittany (Jerry), Letisha (Marcus), Carey (Kayla), Brandon, Nathan, Ashley (Jimmy), Jaron (Amber), Breana, Ariel, Caleb (Kyla), Micaiah (Crystal), Chantiea, Aliyha, , Jaleel, Jeremiah, Aleeseya, Aiyana, Jayden, Jazmine, Arkenbree, Martavius (Jordan), Jonathan, James II, Aidan, and Iviona; 16 great grandchildren; siblings, Barbara Keith and Ulysees Whitsett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
