Obituary

Roosevelt Toomer, Sr. was born in Dawson, Georgia on December 1, 1953. He was the son of the late Bernice Jordan Toomer and Albert Toomer, Sr.

During the early years of his life, he received his formal education in the Leon County Public School System in Tallahassee, Florida.

In later years, he relocated to Albany, Georgia where he resided most of his adult life. Roosevelt confessed his faith and belief in Christ Jesus and united with the Greater Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Lorenzo Heard.

Roosevelt was a very conscientious, hardworking individual who gave his best at whatever he did. Over he years, he labored tirelessly as a Custodian at the Dougherty County Jail. When faced with severe health challenges, he retired after rendering innumerable years of dedicated service. Roosevelt not only took pride in his work, but truly relished the friends that he made during his employment with the County.

"The Mayor" as he was affectionately called by family and friends, had a genuine concern for the people in his life. He had an endless reservoir of compassion for people and loved everyone with whom he came into contact. He was profoundly devoted to his family and his home was a revolving door for his family members who were the benefactors of his kind heart and generosity. Roosevelt loved life, he loved the Lord, he loved his family, and he loved the world in which he lived. He will be greatly missed.

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, Roosevelt was called home to eternal rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Roosevelt Toomer, Jr.; and two siblings, Johnnie Mae Toomer and Jessie Toomer.

He leaves fond memories that will be cherished by his siblings, Willie Mae Hunt, Linda Wingfield, Catherine (Anthony) Isaac, Bernice Toomer, Albert Toomer, Jr., Reese Toomer, James Toomer, and Clarence Toomer all of Albany, GA; one granddaughter, Tra'Sheka Toomer of Albany, GA; a great-great granddaughter, Trinity Toomer of Albany, GA; a special great niece, Malaysia Toomer of Albany, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
