Obituary

Samuel Edward Gregg was born October 28, 1927, in Florence, South Carolina.  He was the beloved son of the late Haskell Gregg, Sr. and Willowdean Mason-Gregg.

He was educated in the Florence County Public School District, including Wilson High School where he was one of the few black students to graduate at the top of his class.

Ready to serve his country, Samuel enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served with distinction.  During his military service, he was the recipient of numerous commendations.  Samuel was a soldier to the core and the discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him.  At the close of his tours of duty, he was honorably discharged and, thereafter, relocated to Albany, Georgia to begin a civil service career at the Marine Corps Logistics Base.  His military service combined with civilian service spanned more than 30 years, and was marked by high unquestionable integrity.

Shortly after meeting and becoming totally captivated by his soul-mate Forestine, they were united as one in holy matrimony.  Samuel's love for his wife was unmatched—she was the sparkle in his eyes and the beat in hi heart.  Together they created a home filled with love and strong family values for their children—James, Vallerie, Michael, and Deborah.  Samuel was a noble husband, father, and grandfather who instilled great knowledge, character, and confidence in his family.

A man of great faith and belief in God, united with New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Booker T. Batten. He was a dedicated and faithful member while availing himself in Christian service as a Deacon—always giving God the glory and praise.

On March 13, 2023, Deacon Gregg/Samuel/Uncle Gregg's 95-year earthly journey ended as he transitioned to his heavenly home.  In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by two children, Vallerie L. Gregg and Michael A. Gregg; and four siblings, Haskell Gregg, Jr., James, Gregg, Olivian Gregg-Clemmons, and Frank Gregg.

His memory will be forever cherished by his loving children, Deborah A. Gregg and James E. Gregg; grandchildren, Roddrick Gregg, Arthur  R. Britton, Jr., Tony D. Gregg, Marquie D. Gregg, Malcom  Johnson (Shianne), and Charmian Boone; eight great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Ruby (James) Gadson an Mary Foster; brother-in-law, Rev. Adolph Lee; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
