Obituary

Mr. Samuel Joseph (Wells) Sutton was born June 28, 1937 in Albany, Georgia to the late Elizabeth Wells Sutton and the late Willie B. Corbett, Sr. His mother later married Mr. Otis Sutton and legally changed his name from Wells to Sutton. He was affectionately called by many as "Joseph" or "Joe".

He began his education by attending Hazard Elementary School; which was located on Albany State College (University) campus. He graduated in 1956 from Monroe High School. While at Monroe, he played football and was a member of the band. After graduation, he attended Albany State College and majored in Engineering. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the Army.

Samuel Joseph Sutton accepted Christ at a very early age and joined the Greater 2 nd Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J. J. Johnson. He later was ordained as a deacon. He served very faithfully as a member and deacon under the leaderships of the late Rev. Charlie Will Heath, Rev. Willie J. Lawson, and the present Pastor, Rev. Lorenzo L. Heard. He served in the capacity of being a teacher for the Men's Sunday school class, and the Wednesday night bible study class. He later remarried (after the death of his wife) and decided to fellowship with his present wife by joining the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Roland Jenkins.

In a special union designed by God, Samuel Joseph Sutton was united in Holy Matrimony with the late Georgie Marie Evans Sutton on May 23, 1957. From this blessed union, six children were born: Karen Felecia Sutton of Atlanta, Georgia; Dennie O'Keith Sutton of Mililani, Hawaii; Audrey Darlette (David) Bradford; Kalvin Joseph (Sandra) Sutton; Stephanie Renae (Delvin) Hawkins, all of Albany, Georgia; and Dwayne Lamar (Vanuza) Sutton of Atlanta, Georgia. After 33 years of marriage with Georgie and full-filling their wedding vows of "Til Death Do Us Part", Joseph later found love again and was united in Holy Matrimony with Angela Jackson Polite Sutton on June 18, 2005. From this union, he gained one step-daughter: Dorothy J. (Johnny) Wright of Albany, Georgia; and three step-sons: James L. Polite, Jr.; of Albany, Georgia; Kelvin R. (Jacquelyn) Polite of Columbus, Georgia; and Anthony W. Polite, who preceded him in death.

After providing service to the country with the United States Army, Samuel Joseph Sutton returned home and worked on several jobs to include: McGregor's and Procter & Gamble Paper Product Company. He later retired from working over 20 years with the Proctor & Gamble Paper Product Company. God blessed him with the gift of having the ability to draw & paint. He was a well-known artist. As a hobby, when he wasn't working, he spent most of his free time painting portraits in his art room. One of his biggest artistic highlights came when he was asked to paint a life-size portrait of Hank Aaron, a professional African American Major League Baseball player with the Atlanta Braves. He really felt honored when he was asked to present the portrait at one of the Atlanta Braves home games at the Atlanta- Fulton County Stadium. In addition to his monetary gift, an extra incentive was granted to show their level of appreciation. ALL of his family members were admitted into the game free of charge. Needless to say, a lot of his family members were in attendance to witness such a monumental recognition. On a local level, he also had the privilege of hosting numerous art shows that displayed all of his art work. One of his shows was featured on the City of Albany's local WALB television station. He also was afforded an opportunity to host an art show in Los Angeles, California. Additionally, he painted and donated a portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; which is presently being displayed in the Civil Rights Museum in Albany, Georgia. He was always inspired to paint nature scenes such as: grasslands, still-shots of different animals, old wooden houses, and beautiful sky scenes that depicted a sunrise or sunset. Joseph loved to grill and cook for not only his family but friends as well.

After a lengthy illness, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, Samuel Joseph Sutton very peacefully departed this earthly life - with his wife (Angela) sitting by his side - and transitioned to his eternal home. He leaves a legacy of love and inspiration to cherish by a devoted wife; 10 children; 21 grandchildren: La'Chelsea, Ebonie, Samuel, Nathalie, Aleshia, Kohya, Yurika, Deondria, Kai, Victoria, Daniel, Joel, Lerkeesha, Jasmine, Shameeka, Courtney, Ashley, VyCountess, Anthony II, Brittney, and Marcus; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Shirley Sutton of New York, New York, and Doris C.
