Obituary

Deacon Solomon Singleton, beloved son of the late Buster Singleton, Sr. and Vessie Lee Singleton, was born in Albany, Georgia on June 4, 1943.

He received his early childhood and secondary education in the Dougherty County School System, graduating from Monroe High School.  While at Monroe, Solomon  gained valuable technical and industrial skills;  was actively involved in various student organizations; and took special interest in school activities and sporting events.   Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served valiantly and with distinction.  He was a soldier to the core and was recognized for his skills as a sharpshooter.  At the close of his final tour of duty in Germany, he was honorably discharged and returned home to civilian life.

Throughout his childhood, Solomon was nurtured in the Word of God.  As a youth, he professed his faith and belief in Christ Jesus and was baptized.   He was a dedicated member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church who served faithfully in the Sunday School Ministry.   As his love for God and the church strengthened, he was ordained as a Deacon and,   thereafter, devoted himself to unparalleled commitment and service to this calling.   Over the years, he remained steadfast and unmovable—always giving God the glory and praise.

In 1967, Solomon met the lovely Vivian M. Hubbard.  Their encounter sparked a courtship that years later stemmed into marriage.  Together, they built a home-life that was anchored in love, adventure, and true devotion to each other until Vivian's demise.  In many ways, Solomon defined the meaning of devoted husband, dedicated father, loyal friend, and conscientious worker—he was the foundation and cornerstone of his family.  In later years, he was united in marriage to Loretta Jones Singleton who also preceded him in death.

A highly skilled and trained individual, Deacon Singleton  was one of the first hires at the General Motors (DELCO) Plant in Albany.  His career at GM facilities in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana was defined by hard work, high expectations, and unquestionable integrity. He was an enthusiastic employee who never shied away from a challenge; rather, he always looked for optimal solutions.    Upon retirement, he was lauded for his integrity, superior work record, and unfaltering perseverance.

"Ironside," as he was endearingly called, was well loved and highly respected by everyone who knew him.  He was larger than life—compassionate, giving, trustworthy, loving, and a confidant. Solomon had a very special way of getting to know people and becoming a part of their lives.  His friendliness and kindness to all people; his willingness to lend a helping hand; his love for his community; and his devotion to his church, family, and friends are lasting tributes to the beauty of his heart and soul.  He has left footprints that will forever be embedded deep in our hearts.

On September 24, 2023, Almighty God called his faithful servant home to eternal peace and rest.  In addition to his   parents and both wives,  he was preceded in death by three siblings, Ruby Nell Stroble, Buster J. Singleton, Jr. and JC Singleton; and his niece, Shabreka Stroble.

Loving memories will forever be cherished by his daughter, Kim A. Hubbard of Douglasville, GA; grandchildren, KeKe A. Johnson of Albany, GA, and Rodgers Corbin Barber III of Douglasville, GA; his brother, Bobby Singleton of Albany, GA; godchildren, LaSala Robinson and Tracy (Whitney) Bradley of Albany, GA; devoted niece and nephew, Dr. Natalie Stroble of Dallas, TX and Bobby Stroble, Jr. of Albany, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins;  very special friends, Fred (Shirley) McCrary of Butler, GA, Shirley (Andre) Williams of Miami, FL, Tint (Mandy) McCrary of Cedar Rapids, IA,  Dexter (Nina) McCrary of Gonzales, LA, and Travis McCrary of Butler, GA; and his church family and friends.
