Obituary

The journey of life for Verdell Hart Walker began in Clay County, Georgia on May 13, 1941.  She was the beloved daughter of the late Katie P. Barbary and the late Odell Hart.

During the early years of her life, she received her formal education in the Clay County School System.  Throughout her school years, she was actively involved in various school organizations and activities.

Verdell was raised in a Christian home where she was taught the Word of God and the importance of living a life of integrity, strong character, and kindness.  At a very young age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and united with the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend A. W. Woodson.  As she journeyed through the years in Christian stewardship, she was a faithful and dedicated member who willingly served in numerous capacities, including Secretary of the Deaconess and Vice President of the Nurses Aide.  Verdell was a prayer warrior who was strong in her faith, in character, and in wisdom.

She was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Willie George Walker.  They shared a life filled with love and true devotion to each other.  Their union was blessed with loving children who were taught to be loving, kind, and respectful.  Through the years, Verdell was steadfast in her dedication to foster a home filled with love and strong family values.  As a wife and mother, she ate not the bread of idleness and always sacrificed her needs for the good of her family.  Her commitment to her family was the cornerstone of who she was.

A joy to be around, Verdell was a very genuine, kind-hearted, individual who showed love in many ways.  She was one of those rare people who always had the interest of others at heart, was selfless and saw the beauty in all things, and could converse with anyone who came into her life.   She touched the lives of people around her in a very special way and made many lasting friendship.  You couldn't know her without being inspired by her love and devotion to her family, friends, and church.  Cooking was one of her greatest life pleasures.  She loved being in the kitchen and her table was always spread with delicious treats for family and friends to enjoy.

On Saturday, August 1, 2020, God called his faithful servant home to eternal rest and peace.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie G. Walker; her stepson, Wilburn Walker; and four siblings, Cora Simmons, Betty Jean Lee, James Barbary, Jr., and Willie Ed Barbary.

Left with many loving memories to cherish are her daughters, Sharon Walker of Albany, GA and Linda Humphries of Savannah, GA; granddaughter, Megan Humphries of Savannah, GA; siblings, Rev. Dr. Willie (Helen) Bagley, Sr., Anne Barbary, Carolyn B. Walker, and Amy (Johnny) Bush all of Albany, GA; aunt, Edith Williams of Albany, GA; devoted neighbors; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
