Verdell Mathis, beloved daughter of the late Funnell Moultrie and Lucille Miller, was born in Albany, Georgia on December 24, 1958.
She attended the public schools of Dougherty County, including Monroe High School. She continued her quest for knowledge at Albany Technical College where she earned an Associate's degree in Horticulture.
From a very early age, Verdell was nurtured in the Word of God. As a youth, she began her fellowship with Christ at Ephesus Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dunlap. Later, she continued her walk with the Lord at Third Kiokee Baptist Church and served faithfully in numerous capacities until her demise.
Among all of Verdell's accomplishments, being a mother to Da'Shuna, Kymberly, Orinthius, and Shannon was her greatest source of joy. She was a loving and caring mother who worked untiringly at M & M Mars and Tara Foods for numerous years to provide unconditionally for her family. When she wasn't working, Verdell could be found relaxing and spending time with family and friends. She was an outdoors enthusiast, had a fantastic green thumb, and could transform a barren yard into a lush landscape.
Verdell had a servant's heart and felt most content when helping others. She was a very kind, gentle-hearted person who embraced life's experiences with open arms; who prided herself in having relationships full of love, humor and respect; and whose engaging personality captured the hearts of all who knew her.
On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Verdell's earthly journey ended as she transitioned to her eternal home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Lee Matthews; and her grandson, Davon Allen Earl Mathis.
Precious memories will forever remain in the hearts of her children, DaShuna Mathis, Orinthius (Christie) Mathis, Sr. and Shannon Mathis all of Albany, GA, and Kymberly (Christopher) Hardaway of Pine Mountain Valley, GA; fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren; siblings, Milton Miller, Marie Edwards, and Janie (James) Holloway of Albany, GA, Willie Mae (Willie) Cook of Jacksonville, FL, LaVerne Trice of Philadelphia, PA, and Eddie Mathis of Columbia, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
