Obituary

Deacon Walter M. Hall, III was born to the late Lee Hilson Hall, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Davis on December 09, 1943.  He was the fifth of ten children born to this union in Baker County, Newton, Georgia.

A Time to Die:

Walter departed this life on March 16, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones in his home.

A Time to Grow:

Walter was brought up in the place of his birth, attending and graduating from the public schools in the Baker County School System.  Following high school, Walter enlisted in the United States Navy serving dutifully and with distinction for three years, and two years in the Navy Reserves.  He was honorably discharged December 1968.  He attended and earned diplomas from Albany Technical College in Brick Masonry, Auto Mechanics, and Small Engines.

A Time to Live:

Walter met and married the love of his life, Celia Payton, on August 6, 1966.  They became one flesh.  To this union Angelita and Petrina Ann were born.  He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, affectionately called "Papa."

A Time to Work:

A trailblazer in his own right, Walter was the first African American hired by United Parcel Service in Albany, Georgia in 1969.  After working diligently for over 30 years, Walter retired from UPS on November 11, 1999, with distinguished awards and honors. In addition to his service to UPS, Walter served as Vice President on the board of East Baker Historical Society and was a lifetime member.  He was also an expert in rebuilding small engines and enjoyed working as a mechanic in his backyard as a pastime.  The word was, "if Walter can't fix it, it can't be fixed."

A Time to Worship:

Walter accepted Christ at an early age and joined Green Grove Methodist Church in Baker County, Newton, Georgia.  In later years, he joined with his wife under the late Reverend John Harris at Weldon Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Baker County, Newton, Georgia.  He was ordained as a Deacon in January 2001 under the late Reverend Billy R. Brown.  He was inspired to lead and managed the construction and building of the fourth and fifth churches of Weldon Springs.  He was a tremendous asset to the church and served faithfully as an Usher, Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and Deacon for over 50 years.

A Time to Remember:

Deacon Hall leaves a beautiful legacy.  He will surely be missed by all who know him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Hilson Hall, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Davis Hall, one brother Lee Hilson Hall, Jr. and four sisters, Marion H. Lallmahamad, Saundra H. Jester, Bessie Mae H. "Jean" King, and Carolyn H. Burns.  In addition to a host of family and friends, Walter leaves cherished and lasting memories with his devoted wife Celia of 57 years, two daughters, one son-in-law, and special niece, Angelita Hall (Parks) of Duluth, Ga., Petrina (James) McDaniel of Atlanta, Ga., and Tiffany LeAnne Hunter of Peachtree City, Ga.; three sisters, Victoria Hall of Albany, Ga.; Mary Ann Green of Columbus, Ohio; and Anne Phipps of Peachtree City, Ga.; one brother, Alexander (Tonya) of Albany, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Dianne (James) Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., and two brothers-in law Willie C. Payton of Albany, Ga. and Jerome Jester, Sr. of Camilla, Ga.  The apple of his eye were his four grandchildren, Tyler Maxwell and Addison Bailey Parks; and James Bruce, III ("Mac") and Payton Harper McDaniel (affectionately called "Rosie").
