Obituary

Waymon Fowler, beloved son of the late Nettie Howard and Ed Fowler, was born November 12, 1927, in Worth County, Georgia.  He was the last surviving sibling of 17 brothers and sisters.

He received his formal education in the Worth County Public School    System.

Waymon's work ethics developed early while working as a farmer.    After moving to Albany, he began a career as a truck driver.  He was a hard-working, energetic individual who loved driving and operated everything from local trucks to 18-wheelers all over the country.  Waymon finished his career with Marlene Industries in New York City.  He was united in      marriage to Rosa Lee Simon and they relocated back to Albany, Georgia upon his retirement.

Affectionately known as "Duke and Duke Chunky" all his life, Waymon was a man of all seasons, including being a "shade tree mechanic", an excellent cook, and an avid hunter.  His favorite pastime, however, was hunting.  Duke was happiest when meandering through the woods with his favorite coon dog—a pleasure that he truly relished until his health declined.  In  later years, he enjoyed fishing and nothing pleased him more than a good old-fashioned fish fry.

Family was the center of his life and he enjoyed every moment he spent with them; especially his grandchildren.  He loved cooking for them and sharing food from the good ole days.  Duke was  a great conversationalist who oftentimes spent endless hours sharing tall tales with the fellows at the  barbershop.  As patriarch of the family, he was the curator of family history and would sometimes put his spin on how he thought things should be done. He was a kind, considerate man who was highly-regarded and respected in the East Albany community.  He had a special way of getting to know people and becoming a part of their lives.

After a very lengthy illness, Waymon was called to rest on May 15, 2023.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Lee; his siblings; and five children, William, Frederia, Athalia, Harold, and Michelle.  He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and loyal friend.

Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of his children, Vera Terrell, Nettie Hill Wilson, Waymon Benjamin Fowler, Michael (Veronica) Fowler, Georgia (Michael) Johnson, Major Noble, and Lazora McCoy; 70+ grandchildren and great grandchildren; son-in-law, Edward "Hammer" Kegler; daughter-in-law, Rosetta Coleman; sisters-in-law, Betsy (Clint) Melton, Mattie Staggers, Sally Williams, Laura Farrington, Ruby H. Williams, and Mary Williams; brothers-in-law, Richard (Christine) Simon and Willie Crafton and wife; three devoted cousins, Carrie Melton, Rutha Pearl Barlow, and Frank Fowler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.  We thank God for the gift of Waymon and the many years he shared his love with us.  It was truly a great blessing.
