The season of life for Willie Mae Adams Davis began on May 4, 1934, in Smithville, Georgia. She was one of twelve children born to the union of Claude and Imogene Adams. During the early years of her life, she attended the public schools of Smithville, Georgia.
Willie Mae had the great advantage of growing up in a home in which the Lord was feared and worshipped. At a very early age, she professed her faith and belief in Christ and united with the Green Grove Baptist Church. Through the years, she served faithfully as a member of the Senior Choir, and Director of the Youth Department and Vacation Bible School. She was strong in faith, in character, in wisdom; and she stood boldly for the cause of Christ.
In 1951, she was united in marriage to her beloved Walter Lewis Davis, Sr. Their union was blessed with a family of eight children who were taught to be respectful and humble, to love one another, and to love and trust in the Lord. As loving and supportive parents, they encouraged their children to utilize their God-given gifts of song while traveling throughout Southwest Georgia as the "Davis Family."
Over the years, Willie Mae garnered much from her life experiences and held fast to her belief in professional work ethics and responsibilities. She was a persistent, hardworking individual who was very passionate about her work as a Machine Operator at Manhattan Shirt Company of Americus, Georgia and as a Dietician at the New Communities Day Care Center in Smithville, Georgia. Never satisfied with idleness after retirement, she embarked on a political career, was elected to the Smithville City Council, serving until 2015; and became one of the oldest/longest ranking council women in Georgia.
"Mother Davis" as she was affectionately called by many, had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and used her talents to help others. She was a skillfully accomplished seamstress; enjoyed cooking, flower arranging, and gardening; and oftentimes was found planting flowers around downtown Smithville and Green Grove Baptist Church. The words, "If I can help somebody as I travel along….then my living shall not be in vain," truly exemplified Mother Davis' life.
On November ?, 2018, her earthly season ended as she was called home from labor to reward. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lewis Davis, Sr.; two sons, Curley Dwayne Davis and Ferrando Davis; granddaughter, Jamila Davis; and nine siblings.
Left to cherish fond memories are her loving children, Walter Davis, Jr., Melvin Davis, and Gregory Davis of Smithville, GA, Connelton Davis of LaGrange, GA, Rose Maria (Kenneth Sr.) Youngblood of Albany, GA, and Felicia Anne (James) Moore of Auburn, AL; sisters, Ruby Allen and Claudia Dismuke of Hartford, CT; 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; and a myriad of other relatives and friends.
