Obituary

Willie Russell, son of the late Stafford Quincy, Sr. and Millie Mae Rivers Russell, was born in Albany, Georgia on July 25, 1944.

Throughout his school years, he was an inquisitive young man with a zeal of learning; was actively involved in various school activities and events;  and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Tampa, Florida.

An ardent military enthusiast, Willie valiantly served his country in both the United States Navy and the Reserves.  During his 12-year tour of duty, he was stationed at military installations in Quonset, RI, Fort Dix, NJ, Fort Eustis, VA , and Vietnam where he served two combat tours.  Willie received the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter (M16 Rifle). Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Korea Service Medal as he advanced in the military ranks.  At the close of his tours of duty, he was honorably discharged.

Willie was not only a brave and loyal soldier, but a loving husband and father as well.  While in Tampa, Florida, he met and married Delores Lee Washington.  With this union, two children were born—Donald and Steven.  At the completion of his military career, he relocated to Albany, Georgia where he met Virginia Ware Stephenson.  They were joined in marriage and became a blended family with three additional children, Henry, Brian, and Tamara Stephenson.  They shared a love and devotion to each other that endured for 32 years.

In addition to his military service, Willie's professional career was diverse and most rewarding.  He was a loyal and dedicated employee of the Albany Marine Corps Logistics Base  and the Dougherty  County School System.  No matter what the task, he worked untiringly to ensure and maintain high quality standards until his retirement.  Willie dearly loved the Lord and was an active member of Third Kiokee Baptist Church where he willingly gave of himself wherever needed.

Affectionately known as "Sonny," a nickname given to him by his mother, Willie was profoundly devoted to his family and friends, loved the people in his life with heartfelt sincerity, and was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He had a very welcoming spirit and the strong bonds of friendship that he developed through the years will forever be remembered.

On December 9, 2021, Willie peacefully transitioned from this earthly life at the Willson Hospice House.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Stephenson Russell.

Loving memories will forever be cherished by his children, Donald (Teresa) Russell of Dawson, GA, Steven (Tammy) Russell of Hampton, VA, Henry (Monetta) Stephenson of Albany, GA, Brian Stephenson of Atlanta, GA, and Tamara "Kitty" Stephenson of Albany, GA; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
